Our site with views towards whitby

  • Peaceful, dog-friendly site within the North York Moors National Park
  • Five minutes’ drive from Whitby's seaside, abbey and museums
  • Barbecues permitted on site and cycle hire nearby
Pitch up in the North York Moors National Park at Long Meadow Farm and the pretty views will have you itching to get out for explores of both coast and countryside. There are plenty of walks in the surrounds for all abilities at this family- and dog-friendly site, five minutes’ drive from the sea at Whitby, with wildlife to keep an eye out for as you amble. If you prefer to trundle on wheels, cycle hire is available over the road from Long Meadow. After a day well spent navigating the local area, head back to the park for some refuelling – there’s a supermarket in Whitby for supplies and barbecues are permitted on site, so grab anything that can be grilled and get ready to tuck in. If your roams have you tired out and you’re not up to cooking, a couple of pubs serving meals are within walking distance, so you can stop in for a quick refreshment before hitting the hay. Please note that this site does not have toilet or shower facilities.

What customers say

Lovely, tidy site in a great spot for Whitby. Peaceful with easy check-in. Basic facilities, but no loos or showers mentioned. Pitches are nice, if a bit snug. A good base for exploring!

Electric gravel touring pitch

Liked Nice little site, no facilities but we mostly use our own anyway so now a problem.
Lovely quiet walk into Whitby ( just over an hour). Two pubs sorry walk away. Very clean and tidy.

Disliked Paid nearly £3 per night for our small dog but there was nothing for this money and I feel it’s just an easy way of bumping up the price as the majority of campers have a dog.

Non-electric gravel touring pitch

Liked Long Meadow Farm camping

We booked our 2 nights stay through Pitchup with the owners texting us our pitch number. We had to text to let them know we had arrived so hassle free check in.

EHU one side non the other neatly cut cosy site with gravel and grass per pitch. You can pay for a small porch type awning which we did but didn’t use as found grass was too small an area which meant your more too close to the next pitch.

No toilets or showers has elsan, water and rubbish disposal.

Bus stop out on main road about 2 mins walk to Robin Hood Bay and Scarborough the other to Whitby.

Pub The Windmill 15 mins walk along the cinder track.. delicious fish & chips £14.95.

We’ve been here before and had no hesitation to return this year

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked A lovely little site. Hands off management which is great if you prefer doing things yourself. You get a comprehensive email on booking with lots of site and local information and a text on morning of arrival with your plot number and a number to call if you have any issues (we did not).

Plot numbers are clearly laid out so very easy to find, relatively flat but we did use one levelling ramp, 2 water taps (one with handy hose attached), one Elsan for black and grey waste disposal, one wheelie bin for rubbish disposal.

The site is right by the A171 which means that there are some road noises but nothing that disturbed any sleep. Lovely view of Whitby, its Abbey and the sea beyond.

There is a bus stop a stone’s throw on the A171 with regular buses travelling from back and forth between Scarborough and Whitby via Robin Hood’s Bay and beyond (X93 or 94); the site is also right by the Cinder Track, an old rail track converted into a walking and cycling track. It spans 21.7miles from Whitby to Scarborough via Robin Hood’s Bay.

We stayed for 3 nights and did not really move the van. The Cleveland Way is a 2.5km stroll up the road and across some fields and then, if you go North, it is a further 3.5km to the famous Abbey, a breathtaking walk. We then caught the bus back, dropping us more or less on the site’s doorstep, after having some fish and chips from the famous Trenchers.

We also hiked to Robin Hood’s Bay, taking some of the Cinder Track and then veering off to the Cleveland Way/Coast Path at Hawsker Bottoms. A picturesque hike of about 7km. We stopped at the Fish Box at the top of the hill at Robin Hood’s Bay for some fish and chips before walking down through the picturesque village to the sea front for some rock pooling and an amazing ice cream at the old coastguard station run by the National Trust. It was then a hike back up the hill (be warned it is steep) to catch the bus to Whitby, waving at the site as we drove past.

At Whitby, we successfully found some seating at the Whitby Brewery, when we went at the weekend it was heaving due the neighbouring Whitby Traction Engine Rally. The brewery is in the shadows of the Abbey, they sell their brewed beers and homemade pizza’s cooked in an Italian pizza oven. Hands down the best pizza I have ever had.

If we ever go back to the area, we will certainly stay at Long Meadow again. A lovely and well cared little site with great views to the sea and perfectly serviced by a regular bus, so you do not have to worry about where to park your van when you go to the popular coastal towns of Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Scarborough, etc.

Note however, that your van must be self sufficient, there are no toilet blocks, showers or wash up facilities. But this is clearly stated on the booking site.

Disliked Not a major dislike.
Unless we missed a trick, difficult to dump your grey waste. Signs suggested to dump both black water and grey water in the Elsan, but being off the ground and not having a hose this was not possible. We did see a drain but being next to the wheelie bin and hedge, we could not get close enough.

Local attractions

If you don’t spot any animals scampering about the North York Moors while staying at this site, set off to the SEA LIFE Scarborough aquarium and eye up some underwater creatures instead. The town also has a castle to check out, along with a sandy beach (half an hour's drive). Stretches of coast closer by include Robin Hood's Bay (five minutes), which is also home to a fab old fishing village, and strolls along the seaside at Whitby’s harbour are also a satisfying way to while away your time. Head to this town – said to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s spooky novel Dracula – to have a gander at the atmospheric abbey as well. If you’re keen on seeing the scenery of the nearby national park but not on two feet, make tracks to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which leaves from Whitby and chugs along for 18 miles with views of Newtondale’s geological formations and Fen Bog’s nature reserve. Kids can’t keep still? Tire them out at Go Ape Dalby (35 minutes), a treetop adventure park with all sorts of activities available, or take them to Alpamare waterpark (25 minutes) to whoosh down the slides and float in the pools.
