  • Basic site on a working farm overlooking Whitby and the North Sea
  • A five-minute drive from centre of Whitby, 35 minutes from Scarborough
  • Less than five minutes’ walk from brewery, beach and Whitby Abbey
When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There are no showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life. The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach. Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

What customers say

A no-frills campsite with a cracking location, perfect for a short break. Fantastic sea and Abbey views, a stone's throw from town and the brewery. Staff are a friendly bunch. Facilities are basic, but okay for a few nights. Watch out for the wind up on the cliffs!

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Perfect location by the sea. Firm ground with lots of space for the kids to run around and close to the steps to get into town. The toilets were fine plus the added bonus of a washing up sink. Also appreciated being able to park up in the adjacent small field for £5 the following afternoon. Staff super friendly and helpful.

Disliked Nothing to complain about. It’s a pity the council don’t allow them to open more often.

Liked Great location close to the fab brewery tap room, the Abbey and the top of the famous steps.

Huge area so plenty of space to park or pitch.

Basic site, but as long as you know what you’re booking I don’t think you can complain.

Disliked Open space so on a windy night you would be open to the elements

The view is absolutely breathtaking!
The costal walk is literally on the door step and the view of the Abbey is unreal. A firm favorite now for us and we can't wait to return. Huge thanks for the beautiful memories ❤️

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The views from this campsite were truly incredible. I woke up to views of the breathtaking Whitby abbey and the coastline of Whitby. The location is perfect for anyone who wants to spend time in Whitby. We had great views of the sunset and enjoyed a firework display over the harbour on our last night. Staff were incredibly friendly and did regularly patrols around the campsite. The toilets were clean, there was water on sight. You could have bbqs raised off the ground. My whole family loved it.

Local attractions

Not quite done with seaside days just yet? Make the 35-minute drive to Scarborough, farther south on the Yorkshire coast, where – as well as more sandy stretches – guests can explore the Scarborough Fair Collection, get adrenaline pumping at Luna Park, wander about the Italian gardens, and spy out the marine species at Sea Life Sanctuary. Turn away from the sea, then, for inland explores starting in the sprawling North York Moors National Park (10 minutes), which is home to Go Ape Dalby treetop courses (35 minutes) and the rides and animal shows at Flamingo Land (40 minutes). There’s a healthy dose of history to be had hereabouts too, with Ormesby Hall (40 minutes), Nunnington Hall (55 minutes), Rievaulx Terrace (one hour) and the spectacular Castle Howard (55 minutes) – famed double for Brideshead in both productions of Brideshead Revisited – within relatively easy reach.
