  • Family-run site on a working farm between the Dales and Ribble Valley
  • Farm park and playground on site (tickets must be prebooked)
  • 20 minutes' drive to Skipton Castle and Pendle Hill; 30 to Malham Cove
Get back to the land on this friendly working farm: Thornton Hall Country Park lies on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire, a landscape of stone bridges and deep forests, wild moors and hills. You're welcome to bring barbecues and sizzle your sausages while the sun sets and the cows settle to sleep; for other supplies, the café (open from 10am to 4pm) sells hot and cold food, snacks, desserts and hot and cold drinks (just as well, as you'll need a full tank for what's in store). Unlike the farmer, you don't have to get up at dawn to milk the cows, but you can help out with feeding them later on, as well as feeding the lambs and meeting the llamas. There's a packed schedule of daily activities in the farm park too, from collecting eggs to handling rabbits and guinea pigs. Outdoor and indoor playgrounds ensure the Pennines weather never interferes with plans, and anyone still chasing thrills after descending the 18-foot slide can churn up some mud on the quad bikes. (Please note that the farm park and play areas are separate from the campsite and are subject to extra charges; tickets must be prebooked online.)

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: A wonderful site with clean toilets and showers. They provide EHU and non EHU numbered pitches along with bell rents to rent. There were cows and llamas on the farm along with stunning scenery. I’ve passed by before, and had no idea there was a campsite there. It’s a six minute drive into the charming little town of Barnoldswick, and about fifteen into Skipton. I’d highly recommend.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Really easy place to find, upon arriving the staff were really helpful and gave simple instructions to where we were to pitch our tent. The facilities were spotless and only a short walk from our spot.

Disliked: If the field was fully booked you would have to wait to use the facilities that's all.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: I stayed alone with my 2 children who are 4 and 8. I felt really safe, I booked an electric pitch and I was having some trouble with my electric hook up and Davide was really helpful and friendly. All of the staff were so nice to us and helpful when I asked things. They tried to find me a spare electric hook up which was so kind. I had already booked my kids tickets to the farm not realising that when you stay you get 50% off the entry, so they let us in for free an extra day. It was fabulous. I’ve never taken them away on my own but I would bring them every year going forward. So much to do, see and play on. Loads of activities but also great to come back to the nice clean campsite and play out in the field and spot the wildlife. The facilities were great and I saw them being cleaned twice a day. We only live 40 minutes away and I initially booked so I wasn’t too far away with them on my own but I would and will return without hesitation and I have recommended it to all of my friends with children.

Disliked: Nothing! We loved everything :)

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Clean albeit small facilities Small relaxed site Great having a farm, soft play and playground available (at extra cost)

Disliked: Supposed to pay full entrance fees to pop in and grab a coffee - luckily we were able to nip in and grateful for that! Dance party on at the time that we didn’t know about, lots of party goers leaving late at night past the camping area (though the music was fun for a bit!) Our pitch was a bit slopey

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Nice area and well kept campsite. Good views and the local pub was very accommodating.

Disliked: Limited facilities which meant you where waiting at times. One night after 10pm which upset some of the dogs on the site. Not sure.if this was linked to the entertainment venue which is on the site.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The grounds was great for pitching on, nice and flat and the ground wasn't too hard. All very well kept. Toilets and shower are basic but exactly what you need and very clean. There is an option to go into the farm and soft play at discounted price which the little one loved. Park was great along with some bouncy fun. Amazing little spot and great value for what you spend. Very quiet and just an all round pleasant place to stay. Bonus is you are allowed a camp fire. Supermarkets 5 mins down the road by car to stock up on supplies. 100% will be back again to stay, well worth the money

Local attractions

Miles of circular path steeped in the mystery of the Pendle witches and the romance of the Brontë sisters, the Pendle Way passes through the farm. If you don't fancy the 45-mile full monty, sections of trail take you up Pendle Hill, or through Wycoller, the inspiration for Jane Eyre. You can also walk a chunk of the Pennnine Way from Thornton village, passing over Elsack Moor and down into the old village of Lothersdale. Skipton (15 minutes' drive) has a 12th-century castle that's hung onto its roof and dungeon through centuries of strife. The adjacent wood is the remnant of the ancient forests that once covered all of Yorkshire – it's full of trails and if you're lucky you'll spot kingfishers, herons and buzzards. Skipton is a handy spot for hiring bikes and taking boat trips down the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Head to the Pendle Heritage Centre in Barrowford (20 minutes) to uncover the murky legends and the even murkier truths of the 17th-century Pendle Witch trials. Wizard fans should be sure to visit Malham Cove (half an hour), the massive cliffs featured in Harry Potter films. Finish off by following the trail to Janet's Foss, a waterfall said to be home to the Queen of the Fairies. Out here, it's not hard to believe it.
