  • Small site on a farm on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • Half an hour’s drive from Scarborough and 40 minutes from Whitby
  • Dogs welcome; easy access to hiking and biking trails in Dalby Forest
Fancy a spot of wild camping in a location that puts you within easy reach of windswept moors, North Sea beaches and forested walks? Then head to South Moor Farm, on a small livestock farm in the middle of Dalby Forest, a large wooded area on the southern edge of North York Moors National Park. With just a handful of pitches on well-maintained grass plots, this relaxed and rural spot comes with access to basic amenities, including a water tap, waste recycling and a disposal point for chemical waste (green chemicals only). There are two toilets and a shower on site, too. The pitches are in a paddock between the owners’ house and a barn, within easy cycling or walking distance of many local rights of way. A couple of pubs can be reached within about a 10-minute drive, and larger towns like Scarborough are half an hour away if you fancy a day at the beach or a night out – or if you need to stock up on essentials or camping equipment. Dogs are allowed at this family-friendly site, but please keep them on a lead at all times around the farm.

What customers say

This quiet site's in a great spot by Dalby Forest, grand for walks and cycles. Guests loved the friendly owners and their sociable dogs. Facilities are clean and tidy, if a bit limited at times. Farm animals add to the charm. A brilliant value getaway.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked The setting.
The cows.
Hosts were polite.

Disliked Toilets were dirty and needed a good clean.
Pot wash taps were too small for the sink, you couldn't get your plates under to rinse them.off.
The water was scalding hot, no warning signs.
Path to the toilets was slippery.
Dog mess left on grass.
Refuse bins were much too far away from the pitches.
Probably ok for a one night stop off as part of a longer journey.

From the manager: Thank you for an interesting review.
I do wish guests would point out any problems whilst they are here,
Toilets were dirty? Do you mean the toilet bowls? they are cleaned daily but we do not follow every guest. There are toilet brushes.
Did you mean the floors? Again cleaned daily, but grass and mud gets trodden in during the day. Push taps? We are not on mains water, push taps reduce wastage.
The water is hot if you run it long enough but we do not think it is scalding hot.
Slippery parh? please wear appropriate foot wear.
Dog mess? We are dog friendly and clean up regularly, if we have missed some, please tell us.
The Refuse bins are at the entrance/exit to the property, easy enough to use as you are leaving.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Beautiful location, quiet and peaceful. Good electrical connection and water supply. Friendly hosts. The Wi-Fi was also excellent.

Disliked Toilets x 2 and shower x 1 were pretty basic and a touch grubby, so tended to use our own facilities = shower and toilet.

No grey waste discharge point.

From the manager: Thank you for the review. Sorry the WiFi did not reach your pitch, it only covers about 50% of pitches at the moment. You can get WiFi nearer the house or barn.

Local attractions

Start your exploration of Dalby Forest at the visitors’ centre (15 minutes’ drive), where you can get expert advice on the best hiking routes. If you’re into birdwatching, head to the Raptor Viewpoint, where valley views come with sightings of ospreys and sparrowhawks. At National Trust - Bridestones, Crosscliff & Blakey Topping interesting rock formations date from the Jurassic Age. In Scarborough (half an hour), the 1930s Scarborough North Bay Railway, which goes through Northstead Manor Gardens and along the North Bay, is an effortless way to explore (some of) the town. Stop for an ice cream or fish and chips on either of the two sandy beaches, which are separated by a headland topped by the ruins of Scarborough Castle. Whitby (40 minutes) is renowned for its connection to Bram Stoker, who was inspired to create his character Dracula by the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, on a headland accessed via the 199 Steps. Across the River Esk, the Whalebone Arch overlooks the working harbour and is a great frame for a picture of the abbey.
