Stone circle with rural scenery behind

  • Rural North Yorkshire site over five acres, with great views
  • A 10-minute drive from Northallerton and North York Moors
  • Communal campfire area and fire baskets on site; pub half a mile away
A bit of quiet countryside chilling out or all sorts of North Yorkshire adventures – Sentry Circle Camping, three miles from Northallerton, is a fine spot for either (or a bit of both…) This rural site has the quite the history behind it – its name comes from the ancient stone circle in one of its fields, and its local village, Brompton, is the agreed location of the Battle of the Standard in 1138 (and also where local militia gathered ahead of the 1303 campaign to retake Scotland). These days it’s a much quieter place, where you shouldn’t find any swords getting in the way of your trip along a footpath to get to its shop and pub half a mile away. If you’ve come here in search of outdoor activities, you should find plenty of those in the North York Moors (10 minutes’ drive) and Yorkshire Dales (25 minutes) national parks – or perhaps on the Coast to Coast Walk, which passes a little under two miles away. Golf, horse riding and fishing are all easily accessed nearby too for a change of rural activity. Back at base, pitches are spread out over five acres of open fields, with plenty of space to run about and play games. Keeping warm later in the day requires a campfire, of course – and you can sort this by either settling down at the communal campfire pit or borrowing individual fire baskets to build your own blaze. Kiln dried logs are available to purchase on site. There is no wifi on site, meaning that guests can leave their emails behind and focus on kicking back and admiring the view.

What customers say

A friendly, relaxed site with grand views and a stone circle. Praised for spacious pitches, welcoming owners & good value. Basic but clean facilities, including hot showers. Some road noise & sloping pitches, but a peaceful, communal vibe. Great for a back-to-basics stay.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Very spacious field, hot water and drinking water available and space to wash your own pots.

Disliked We wished there could have been a children's park or play area for anything for them to do, seems camp fire are reserved for favourites/regulars and also a drone kept hovering over us most of the day/night which I found very strange and made me feel uneasy as we had children.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Lovely relaxed campsite, Derek (the owner) very easygoing, allowed our group to pick our own pitches together, with enough space between groups/pitches we were even able to do a 10 person yoga session on the field! Ronni in the hippy shop was also fabulous, stocking anything, everything and more you may have forgotten to bring yourself. Although our group was having a big catch up so didn’t join in this time, the fantastic addition of a 7pm quiz around the communal fire pit (£1 to enter, proceeds go to Yorkshire Air Ambulance) definitely puts this campsite above and beyond. They often have events on too so keep an eye on their Facebook page, it was lovely walking around the Combat Camp and looking into all the hippy and art stalls. The toilets were clean, as was the shower, with plenty of hot water to wash yourself, hands and pots at the outdoor sink. Fire pits are allowed, wood is sold on site for £5 a bag so you don’t even have to lug your own about! Overall, a brilliant campsite with a relaxed atmosphere which we will definitely be returning to (and will join in the quiz this time).

Disliked If camping on the side field, it’s a couple of hundred metres uphill walk to the toilet/shower/sink block, though there is a portaloo, I’ll take this into consideration when pitching next time we come as someone currently with mobility issues. Take a torch to the toilet as it is very dark and the light did not work.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Easy going, friendly campsite. Clean and well provided ammenities. A great option of renting wood burners. We camped on the weekend of the Quietly Inspired festival. Not a problem as there was a separate field for us non festival goers. A walk up the hill to the stone circle at sunset is recommended.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Friendly host, nothing was too much trouble. Hot water in showers, chilled atmosphere. Story of the sentry circle stones, log fires. Ladies in the hippie shop, quirky things for sale in the hippie shop. As you can see we loved it. We had a campervan with rooftop tent and was allowed to park where we wanted, no rush to leave, scenic views.

Local attractions

Aiming for lots of outdoor activities? Osmotherley (10 minutes’ drive) is a good place to head for – it’s the starting point for lots of trails in the North York Moors National Park, including the Lyke Wake Walk. For other options, there’s a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away, or a bit of angling at Stonebridge Fishing Lakes (20 minutes’ drive) or you can ride out of a horse trekking centre (25 minutes). For more leisurely days, potter around the indie shops in Northallerton (10 minutes), explore the National Trust site at Mount Grace Priory (10 minutes) or head to the stately home Kilpin Hall (20 minutes). The Forbidden Corner (45 minutes) is another fabulous place to visit – the four-acre garden is full of unusual bits and pieces including statues, follies, a huge pyramid and a ‘path to nowhere’. All of this will probably keep you busy for quite some time, but if you need more ideas, it’s worth noting that it’s only a 25-minute drive to the Yorkshire Dales National Park…
