  • Tiny adults-only site in a private garden in the village of Rillington
  • Halfway between York and Scarborough, each a half-hour drive
  • Next to a path with access to the Wolds Way and Scampston Estate
The owner of Tent-ative Steps describes it as ‘a walker’s best friend’ – and you can certainly see why. This tiny adults-only site sits in a private garden that’s directly on a public footpath with links to the Yorkshire Wolds Way, making it a lovely little overnight spot for those taking on the full 79-mile trail as well as those planning more local wanders. The site is in the village of Rillington and it backs onto the gorgeous Scampston Estate – one of the places you can walk to easily while staying here. Being within the village also means that it’s only a short stroll to two pubs, a shop and a fish and chip shop – all very handy for making sure you don’t go hungry. The village also has bus stops to make it nice and easy to get out and about if you’re travelling without a car – for example, the Coastliner bus stops at the end of the lane and will whisk you all the way to the centre of York. For those with a car, the city is about half an hour’s drive away – and you’ll also be able to drive to places like Scarborough, Cayton Bay, Castle Howard and Eden Camp Modern History Museum. The tiny site is very much a back-to-basics setup, but it’s a lovely spot to relax for a little while. It’s off grid so there’s no electric connection or wifi, just a chemical toilet, a picnic table and an outside tap (with hot and cold water). Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead to protect the local hedgehogs.

Local attractions

Getting out on foot? The Yorkshire Wolds Way is the big one, running for 79 miles across the stunning chalk hills, but there are plenty of gentler strolls around too, including the paths leading to Scampston Hall & Walled Garden, with pretty gardens designed by Capability Brown. For other activities, you may like to head to Dalby Forest (25 minutes’ drive), which has world-class mountain bike trails along with a Go Ape course and forest segway rides. Or perhaps you’d like to hit the waves at Cayton Bay (half an hour), which is home to a surf school. Scarborough (half an hour) is a good option if you’re more in the mood to relax on the beach (and it has the Natureland Seal Sanctuary too). A day in York (half an hour) offers up all sorts of attractions, including the National Railway Museum and York’s Chocolate Story; another intriguing visit is Wharram Percy (25 minutes), an atmospheric deserted medieval village.
