  • Glamping pods five minutes’ drive from the Coast to Coast cycle path
  • A five-minute drive from Beamish, the Living Museum of the North
  • Family friendly and well maintained; walk to the pub, shop or bus stop
As tempting as it is just to let your eyes wander over pics of the stunning glamping pods at Alma Meadow Glamping, don’t get carried away for too long. There’s much more you need to know about these well-maintained, family-friendly glamping pods… To start, they're just five minutes’ drive away from the Coast to Coast cycle path, a fabulous trail running through the local (and faraway) countryside. Beamish, the Living Museum of the North, is also five minutes’ drive away. Its reconstructed village, town and farm venues bring life in the northeast between the 1820s and 1950s back to life for visitors. Country pubs are something that go happily hand-in-hand with laidback lodge holidays, and handily there are lots within a short walking or driving distance of the site, including one half an hour’s walk away in High Hold. If you don’t fancy switching on the car engine too often, it's good to know there’s a bus stop on the main road under 10 minutes’ walk away from the lodges. There’s also a small shop and a golf course within five minutes’ walk of the lodges. The word 'pretty' might not quite cut it for the accommodation at Alma Meadow Glamping – these dog-friendly pods are set in stunning countryside and each one has a wooden front balcony where you can soak up the scenery. Inside, each pod has an ensuite bathroom and a mini kitchen, with a TV, bed linen and towels all provided. There’s a play area in the grounds with swings and a slide for the kids’ play times.

Camping pod

Liked: Friendly welcome, immaculate pod and site. Unfortunately we experienced a leak from the shower which was draining into the living room that would also explain why that bathroom door stuck as the laminate flooring is lifting clearing with the water leak that must have been ongoing and gone without reporting for some time. Reported to owner who offered to move us into the next pod following morning due to the lateness of us retuning to the pod and noticing the issues. For 2 adult and 2 children aged 8 and 9yrs we were only given 1 bath mat, 2 bath towels and 1 hand towel. I did mention this when reporting the leak. When it come to bedtime and making the sofa bed clearly could establish it was not big enough for two children at all. The pillows and duvet provided again immaculate and comfortable. The double bed had to then house my 2 children and myself while my partner had the sofa bed. Reason my daughter has SEN (special educational needs) she couldn’t settle on the sofa bed with her best friend just not enough room width wise or to top n tale. I therefore struggled to sleep as clearly double bed wasn’t made for 3! My partner had no sleep and back ache as the sofa bed is most uncomfortable sadly hard ridge on the middle. my partner departed the holiday due to the discomfort and pain caused fromThe lack of no sleep. the next day in the new pod (same setup as first) I made sure to fold over the duvet and use as another layer of potential comfort for sleeping while girls had the double bed. We again only had 2 bath towels and 2 hand towels of which one was to become bath mat for the showers. I absolutely hate asking, complaining or mentioning snag/ or missing items or faults but when you’re paying a decent sum not cheap you expect a standard. When no other guests on site I couldn’t understand lack of attention to detail. Had I known the facts of 2 small children at that I would Never have booked as did not meet my criteria for booking in the first place!! This upset of the accommodation and beds has absolutely ruined our holiday stay and the girls and we are disappointed, feel short changed for what we paid over priced. You ask why I didn’t go home after the first nte that’s because of my daughter having the Sen I hoped if they could get a decent sleep 2nd nte they would leave happy, sadly that didn’t work or happen! I am baffled how in peak season no other guests on site which makes me question the price we paid and or others just frightened to speak up but we work hard to earn money for holidays and reviews help you with planning and budgeting for the next one. My overall summary is friendly welcome, unfortunate shower leak, not enough towels for party, missing a mattress topper for sofa bed and that size. On reflection adverts to reflect accurately on what sofa bed can hold eg. children 2x toddlers if top n tail only or 1 child!! This needs urgent revision so no one else experiences the unfortunate reality of what we did on no sleep and discomfort never mind loosing a party member day 2! This kids park was nice addition I add.

Disliked: Sofa bed suitable for 1 person or two toddlers (if top and tail) see images and also very discomforting need memory foam topper or replacement. 2 bath towels and 2 hand towels for 4 people need addressing. After moved pods no bath mat provided so used hand towel and one party member went home as such a poor nte sleep couldn’t face another nte. Site owner said she never received any complaint:negative feedback before now. We were the only ones on the site which questions why in August was the other pods not occupied. I hate having to ask or complain I am all for supporting local/family businesses but I have paid very good money, we had poor 2nte sleep between us the sofa bed clearly only fit for 2 toddlers or 1child I must stress this. Had this bed setup been advertised as accurate as it clearly wasn’t I would not have booked it purely based on the sleeping arrangements. I have been offered no compensation for the huge inconvenience and regards to that aswell we would not return and ask before booking read the occupancy description I mention as owners don’t give true reflection sadly

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We genuinely appreciate both your positive comments and your constructive criticism, as they help us improve our services. Firstly, we are pleased to hear that you found our welcome friendly, and our pods and site immaculate. We take pride in maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hospitality. Regarding the issues you raised: Shower Leak: We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the shower leak. As soon as we were informed, we offered an alternative pod the following morning due to the lateness of the hour. We have since addressed this issue to prevent future occurrences. Towels: Our standard provision includes 2 bath towels and 2 hand towels per pod, which we find sufficient for many of our guests. However, we understand this may not meet the needs of every party, and we do provide additional towels upon request, free of charge, as communicated with each guest upon arrival. Sofa Bed Comfort: We understand your concerns regarding the sofa bed's suitability for two children. Our listing clearly states that our pods are designed for 2 adults and 2 small children. We will review our descriptions to ensure they accurately reflect the sleeping arrangements and comfort levels. General Comfort and Service: We strive to make every stay enjoyable and comfortable. Your feedback about the bed comfort and towel provision has been noted, and we are taking steps to improve these aspects of our service. Additionally, we will make sure to include bath mats in all future preparations, if this was missed when making up a second pod for your family, we sincerely apologise. We deeply regret that these issues impacted your stay and led to discomfort for your family. While we cannot offer compensation, we hope you understand that our intention is always to provide the best possible experience for our guests and your feedback is welcomed. Alma Meadow Glamping.

Camping pod

Liked: The site is relatively small, very tidy, some distance between the pods. The electric shower was a bonus. I was offered to check out a bit later if needed to if we wanted to. The owners were nice and friendly. Would go back. Free netflix on the TV but you need to provide your own WiFi.

Disliked: The lighting in the pod was too bright. I would suggest a dimmer switch, a lamp or lampshade.

Local attractions

Which city first: Durham or Newcastle upon Tyne? In Durham (15 minutes’ drive), there’s a stunning cathedral, castle and botanic gardens. That’s not to mention the riverside park and cricket grounds in the city and at Durham Cricket (10 minutes) a little closer to the site. In Newcastle upon Tyne (25 minutes), track down remnants of Hadrian’s Wall or preoccupy yourself with ogling over the Newcastle Story exhibit and the 34-metre steampowered ship in the Discovery Museum (half an hour). Over the river, the easily recognisable Sage Gateshead (half an hour), with its steel roof, hosts a number of shows. You don’t come across too many opportunities to have a go at driving a real-life digger in everyday life, so make the most of the activities at Diggerland Durham (15 minutes) while you're in the area. Classic car events take place opposite Car Barn Beamish (10 minutes) throughout the year, so check out the schedule before you arrive to check if there’s anything happening during your visit.
