  • Peaceful pub site with large well-maintained pitches
  • In Bolam and five minutes from the A68; play area on site
  • Beer garden; varied food menu to eat in or take away on weekends only
Durham – and Darlington? And holidays in a comely countryside location… with a fine food pub (closed Monday through to Friday, along with the reception) and beer garden right on site? But of course… come to Countryview Caravan and Camping Site. The Countryman pub on site has a properly hefty menu of eats to suit all tastes. It's open for lunch, dinner and Sunday carvery, with takeaways available at lunchtimes and evenings (pizza, parmesans, kebabs and fish and chips being among the options), and includes a large function room for rallies or for big groups. Well-behaved dogs are allowed in the pub. (Please note that the pub is closed on weekdays.) The accommodation part of the park has well spaced pitches, scenic views and a big play area. Showers and toilets are available: toilets in the bar as well as the 24-hour access on site. There are disabled facilities too, plus a parent and baby washroom, chemical disposal and a washing-up area. Free wifi is available in the pub. Countryview's nicely and niftily placed – its peaceful rural setting is five minutes' drive from the A68, in the village of Bolam, and with plentiful shops, restaurants and cafés in Darlington within 15 minutes' drive.

What customers say

A grand, quiet site with stunning views. Pitches are big and tidy, with privacy fences a bonus. The pub gets rave reviews for food and chat. Kids love the playground. Though, some found the loos a bit basic, dated, or not enough when busy. Pub times and noise were also flagged.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely picturesque site. Clean and tidy. Large pitches, well cut grass. There was a gate to make it secure. Electric to my pitch and nearby water. Showers and toilets available. Dogs welcome. Friendly welcome and a mobile number available for any difficulties out of hours.

Disliked Pub opening times were confusing for food. It said closed weekdays on the web site, so we planned an evening meal to cook in the caravan on the Friday, only it turned out it was open Friday. On Saturday, we planned on lunch at the pub, it said open until 2pm for food so we came back from our walk for 1.30 to have some chips or pizza, just a quick snack, but they said they were closed already. There are no nearby shops, so I had a meal of scraps in the caravan.

We'd paid for an extra night so we could leave later than the 11am checkout time on Sunday, but were told that no one could leave between midday and 2.30pm, as the pub car park would be too busy to get a caravan through at that time on a Sunday. That was OK for us, as we wanted to leave later anyway, but I think this should have been explained on booking as someone may want to leave at this time in the future.

Pitches had a fair slope to them.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Well organised spacious site. Large secluded pitches with plenty of grass adjacent to the hardstanding. Great views across the countryside. Quiet and easy to access. Pub on site with restricted hours. Fire pits for hire. All facilities were clean and tidy. Large Playground. Caravan selling drinks and snacks open for a few hours each day. Very helpful owner.

Disliked The toilet blocks although always clean were small.

Local attractions

If you're at the site in summer, take yourself and the crew along to the spectacular live history show of Kynren, using a cast and crew of hundreds to tell the tale of two thousand years of English history and legend as seen by a child. Durham has history galore all year round too: you could also steam along to Locomotion (the Shildon railway museum, within 15 minutes), Bowes Museum (25 minutes), the open-air exhibits of Beamish Museum (45 minutes) and the Kynren backdrop of Auckland Castle (15 minutes). And then there's mighty old Durham (30 minutes), home of spectacular Durham Cathedral as well as – possibly of more interest to the kids – a maze and gardens at Crook Hall. The Hartlepool seaside town of Seaton Carew and the North Yorkshire resort of Redcar are within 40 and 45 minutes' drive for beach days; hikes and bike routes are close by, and the famed High Force waterfall is 40 minutes away. Info on local tourist attractions is at the pub.
