  • Pop-up site in rural Suffolk near Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds
  • A 30-minute drive from Thetford Forest Park and Ipswich river cruises
  • Stay in an old orchard with playground and communal firepit on site
Want to be in deepest countryside but close enough to a town for a spot of shopping or a night in the pub? Check out the offerings at Whitehouse Farm, set in six acres of glorious rural Suffolk, well away from roads and traffic noise and yet only 20 minutes’ drive from the pubs and indie shops of Bury St Edmunds. This is also a super spot for kids, as there is a playground with climbing equipment on site and some fab family walks directly from the farm – you can bring the pooches too but they need to be kept on leads please. The pitches are located in the meadow, just beyond where the shepherd huts sit in the old orchard among damson, apple, pear and greengage trees. Shared facilities include loos, showers, a water tap, a washing-up area and a laundry room. Barbecues are available if you feel inspired to cook, and there's a communal firepit too for sociable evenings. You can pick up supplies in Stowmarket (15 minutes’ drive) – and if you don't fancy cooking, well… those Bury St Edmunds pubs await. For chilly evenings, a sauna is also available (chat to site staff for more details).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked -A beautiful rural location, great for exploring Suffolk and Cambridgeshire
-Lovely clean shower and toilet facilities
-Campsite was secluded and sheltered from the wind
-Plenty to keep the kids entertained away from screens - play area, swimming pond, boat, and fitness trail
-great to be able to enjoy a sauna with a great view and then cold plunge in the pool
-Rob and Alison who own the site are lovely and friendly
-Great relaxed vibe and lots of other families and groups of all nationalities who were lovely to talk to
-A place to BBQ on the campsite
-Wheelbarrows to transport your camping gear from the parking to the site
-Nice that they had no WiFi so the kids weren’t sat on screens

Disliked Nothing really to dislike about the site - everything was great.
My phone signal wasn’t great there (probably says more about the network I am on tbf)

Lovely site with good quality facilities, nice hosts and good walks

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Loved the pond/sauna area, camping glade and look of the Shepard huts, nice and quiet with lovely walks on trails out the back to entertain the dog. Also has good toilet and shower facilities.
Also has good equipment to entertain children with ‘fitness loop’ and climbing frames

Disliked Only small dislike was the motor home pitch was in front of the main house, managed by positioning the camper between where we sat and the house but still didn’t feel particularly private compared to the other camping slots.

Clean and peaceful site highly recommended…

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Space to relax and set in beautiful countryside, pleasant owner, dog friendly and facilities were just right. We will visit again!

Although we enjoyed our stay, the facilities were basic.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Pretty site. Lovely spot. Friendly owner. Well positioned for visits to places in East Anglia.

Disliked Facilities were basic.
The shower & toilet block is unisex, and toilets walls and doors don't come to the floor, so not very private.
Open bin in the block was half full when we arrived, and not emptied for all 4 days of our stay.
No cleaning of the shower & toilet block either (broom and mop did not move for all 4 days)
Two cotton hand towels (changed only on day 1) for everyone to use.
Luckily there was hardly anyone else there to share them with, but still.
Single washing up sink (grubby on arrival and cleaned by us) is outside with no shelter - in fact you have to stand under a dripping gutter to wash up when it rains.
Lots of long stinging nettles surrounding the site, including some right by the water standpipe.
No shop or pub within walking distance.

From the manager: The nearest shop and pub are both are about 2 miles away (quite a few of our campers have walked this). We're in the countryside - there are nettles! We have a combination of maintained areas and re-wilded areas where we let nature take it's course and provide differing habitats and eco-systems. The toilets and showers are unisex, but are regularly cleaned. What this camper didn't appreciate is that the mop and broom kept in the toilet block are for emergency use, the cleaner brings her own. I'll also make sure that from now on when towels are changed (and they regularly are), that a different colour towel is used to make it obvious that a change has been made! Also the cubicles are well over 6ft tall and come to about 4" from the floor. So privacy is NOT an issue. I was unaware of a leaking gutter, it's a shame that this camper didn't mention it at the time rather than complain in the review. It's now fixed.

Excellent site to relax and enjoy nature. We will definitely be back.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Peaceful, fun, beautiful, relaxing, welcoming. These are all words my 11 year year old just said. We loved our stay in our camper at Whitehouse Farm. The owners were lovely and very helpful.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Easily accessible, well-spaced tent pitches within glorious countryside. Lovely wildlife - birds and birdsong aplenty! Logs for sale on site for campfires, bbqs, toasted marshmallows and smores as well as 2x play areas and lovely walking trail around perimeter of site. We enjoyed picking poseys in the meadow - beautiful wildflowers everywhere. Children (6 and 9) had fun trying to catch water skaters and tadpoles in the pond. Clean loos and showers with hot water - all that you could ask for!

Really close (15/20 mins) to Bury St Edmond’s, with its Abbey gardens and market, shops, cafes and restaurants.

Incredibly friendly owner made us feel very welcome.

Disliked Train noise at night on the Friday (must be near a goods train line or something?) woke us in the middle of the night with loud noises. No noise at all on the Saturday night.

Would be nice if the pond had less algae in to make way for a swim: was a bit too natural for us! Though the kids did love pond dipping and was glorious to sit beside it watching the dragonflies and ducks in the sun.

The local pub was closed - nothing to do with the site - but would have been 10/10 if there was a local spot to go for a cuppa or a drink.

From the manager: We've been busy clearing algae and pond weed recently, but unfortunately can't do anything about the train.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Delightful, natural and ecological campsite. Very peaceful site and a warm, friendly welcome. The sun shone, birds sang and camp fire crackled. We had a thoroughly relaxing 2 night stay. So warm and relaxed we didn’t even get around to using the sauna! We did enjoy watching dragonflies and a duck looking very happy on the little lake. (Sauna definitely appreciated when we previously visited in October.). Highly recommend.

Great site, welcoming host, clean facilities.

A well thought out site but not regimented. Perfect for us. We really liked the choices of accommodations, ideal for when we’re camping with friend/family.

Local attractions

The pretty town of Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes’ drive) holds a local market every Wednesday and Saturday, where you can pick up foodie bits and pieces. It also has indie shopping, a spectacular cathedral, brewery tours and popular restaurants for a respite from all the sightseeing. Alton Water (40 minutes) is a top spot for canoeing and sailing, and any rainy days are covered by the swimming pool in the leisure centre at Stowmarket (15 minutes). A day trip to the Norfolk Broads (45 minutes) to hire a day-cruiser boat is also a firm family favourite, or you might like to have a go at punting along The Backs in Cambridge (an hour) – if that’s too much like hard work, take a look at the city’s historic colleges instead. When the kids need a runaround, hire bikes for off-roading at Thetford Forest Park (half an hour) or let them try out the treetop rope courses at Go Ape Thetford (45 minutes). If only a beach day will do, Aldeburgh (an hour) has a sand and shingle stretch that's safe for swimming, and a popular fish and chip shop for after you’ve had a dip.
