General

  • Friendly, simple site half a mile from pubs in the village of Barrow
  • In the grounds of a fitness centre with hairdresser and gym on site
  • Couple of minutes' walk to archery, horse riding and assault course

Back to school for your hols (gasp)? Panic not – Church View Campsite at Suffolk Academy is an entirely blackboard-free zone. In fact, this fab four-acre site is attached to a well-established fitness centre and event space in the little village of Barrow, 15 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds.

Fitness fans, active types and those who just want to have a chuckle at their mates trying to scale sizeable obstacles should all have a whale of a time at this place. The on-site gym’s available to guests on a pay as you go basis, and open 24 hours a day for the hardcore types; if you’d rather work out in the open, drop in next door to the assault course at The Playground, fire a few arrows at the archery club or wander up the road to the local riding stables.

Activities are offered at additional cost and mostly suitable for adults or older kids; away from these, the site is simple, quiet and basic with no additional facilities for kids... just plenty of space to make your own entertainment, play or relax.

Yes, it’s possible that all this activity might mess your hair up... but no, you can’t use it as an excuse to duck out, for there’s a barber and hairdresser on site to restore your barnet to a beauteous state. And it’s worth bearing in mind that (as long as you’re not on some sort of self-inflicted bootcamp) you can reward your efforts with something tasty from the chippy, café or pubs 10 minutes’ stroll away.

Or if it’s all too much, just stay put for an evening’s cookout over a barbecue or a gathering at the campfire area (sometimes with a spectacular sunset to boot – fingers crossed).

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Group bookings of 3 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Facilities/activities including gym are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

On the 1st Sunday of every month the site hosts the start and finish of five- and 10-kilometre running races: this may include some amplified music from around 9am, kept to a reasonable level. In addition, the site hosts the start and finish of marathon events, beginning at 8am and finishing at 4pm and also including some music. These events are on 19/20 April and 5/6 October.

The events are part of the Great Barrow Challenge: guests are welcome to sign up.

The place was very quiet in a lovely setting Julie and Glen was very friendly and helpful the toilet and showers was clean good information when booking on website good communication with Julie and Glen before arriving by texts on arrive only 12 minutes away for Bury St Edwards

    Disliked:

the only thing I would like due to C19 would have be some antiseptic spray or wipes in the toilet/shower and kitchen but it did not put me off the place

From the manager...

Thanks for the lovely review. Will think about leaving some spray and wipes in the shower areas. Anti bac wipes were and are available in the kitchen area which also doubles with the games area and they are available to wipe down the table tennis bats etc. they may not have been obvious and we will think about how that can improve.

Quiet location and a small but cosy campsite. A kitchen area is provided as well as outside washing up. The site was probably 2/3 full when I stayed, and a mix of tents, caravans, motorhomes and a couple of van conversions.

Toilets were clean and well maintained with cleaning being done twice a day.

Check in was done remotely, so I could just turn up in the evening after a last minute scramble to get away, get set up and stroll the half mile to the nearest pub for a Friday evening drink. There are two pubs in the village, both worth a visit on a sunny afternoon.

Good outside activity area for those so inclined!

    Disliked:

A lack of sanitiser, it would have been good to have some by the keypads used to enter and exit the site and by the toilets and showers.

From the manager...

Good point about the sanitiser at keypads, although tricky as nowhere really to put it outside - will look into this though.
Toilets and showers have hot water and soap - more effective and healthy than sanitiser :)
Main building has sanitiser at entrance.

    Small basic toilets

From the manager...

We actually have a range of toilet and shower facilities. Some are indoors , some are outside and smaller but also outside are two combined larger space toilet and shower rooms. During busy periods we have colour coded the facilities to split their use and this allows us to keep them open, so some compromise is required or please ask to use different facilities which is usually no problem. What suits one family may not suit another.

Local attractions

Up for a challenge? The Playground, just next door, has a huge assault course to tackle, along with a collection of more kid-friendly obstacles. If that’s given you an appetite for such antics, follow up with a zip through the trees on the canopy trails at Go Ape!, half an hour away by car.

If that’s not really your style, perhaps trot up the road from the site to Barrow Hall Stables for riding lessons, countryside hacks and summer-hols activity days that should please pony-mad nippers. Want to see the gee-gees going full pelt? The famed racecourse at Newmarket is a 15-minute drive away.

Too much adrenaline? Calmer times are around too – perhaps in the cafés, gardens and abbey of Bury St Edmunds, or with a wander through the stunning gardens at Ickworth (even if you’re not usually one for a stately home, this one’s worth a visit – if only to marvel at its perfectly round Georgian rotunda building). Both are about 15 minutes away by car. The pretty half-timbered houses of Lavenham (half an hour away) are worth a look too.
