  • Peaceful adults-only site two miles from the Norfolk Broads
  • A 15-minute drive from Norwich city centre; 25 minutes from the coast
  • Atmospheric night-time vibes from lit woodlands; café and farm shop
If boating on The Broads has long been on your bucket list, take a look here: the dog-friendly Black Barn Farm is a peaceful place to pitch up two miles from the edge of the national park. Here, the adults-only pitches are in a 22-acre field in an established orchard and surrounded by woodlands, making for a rather chilled-out stay. This area is known as the big sky country, so splendid sunsets and lights in the trees create a pretty nice night-time vibe. You’ll be able to kick off the evening with a firepit or barbecue too, as both are permitted on site. A 15-minute drive from Norwich, this site is on the edge of Salhouse, a rural Broads village. So, bridleways and footpaths may be the first thing to capture your attention, as they lead the way to walking, wildlife spotting and canoe hire in the Salhouse Broad – or there's a place to launch your own canoe or paddleboard, two miles away from the site. Convenience is key at this site, starting with the toilets and showers inside the barn, all heated with auto light switches for that extra ease. The barn also has a small farm shop and a café that serves up sizeable breakfasts plus sandwiches and snacks. Nearby, a train station and bus stop are within walking distance with regular services to Norwich city centre or the coast. Foodie? The local food shop is a 20-minute walk away along a public footpath (or a five-minute car journey). For more specific bits, there’s a bigger supermarket 10 minutes’ drive away and beer aficionados will find a brewery and pub five minutes’ drive away too.

Electric grass pitch

Liked One of the best toilets and shower block you will possibly see on a camp site. Also excellent cafe on site with a variety of other shops. Easy access to Norwich by bus.

Disliked We very often have our grandchild with us so would limit our use of this adult only site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Good sized pitches on a clean campsite. Handy having a cafe and farm shop on site. Good location for the Broads

Disliked The wash facilities although spotless were somewhat inadequate. There need to be more of them and they need to give a thought as to how you wash yourself in a tiny wash basin.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The whole site is lovely with the showers and toilets in the barn which were kept very clean. We only had a 2 night stay so was very nice having the café there on Sunday morning once we'd packed everything away to go and have a very lovely breakfast.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We had a great week at Black Barn Farm at Salhouse, a few miles east of Norwich. The pitch was spacious, with power and water very close. The toilets were always clean and tidy, and the 2 showers were good, although someone should check the valves as they don't shut off completely. Grey water goes into the hedge, and the black water facility is OK, but open air. Best of all is the barn with its huge upstairs cafe (there's a lift) that serves a wide range of all-day breakfasts and drinks. Downstairs, there's a range of craft boutiques and a splendid butcher/deli. There's free wi-fi in the barn and a good 4G signal on the site (we're with Tesco). There's a farmer's market on the 2nd Saturday of the month. There's a bus stop just up the road - 5B every half hour, and P&R at Sprowston. I thoroughly recommend this site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Very peaceful with large pitches. Great location for exploring the area. Facilities were clean and the onsite cafe and shops were fantastic. They even do a menu for dogs! We will certainly let be back.

Disliked Not a dislike but I’m glad I read previous reviews as when I arrived it’s not obvious where to go! So just drive round the right hand side of the barn and the pitches are all behind and you choose your own pitch!
The facilities are under the restaurant! Hope that helps.

Electric grass pitch

Liked What can’t we like.
Upon arrival we were meeted and greeted by Trevor the manager. He was very knowledgeable about the area. He said we could take a pick of a pitch and we found a really secluded corner.
The weather was so hot and this kept us in the shade for the dog
Each pitch has its own water tap and ehu.
Washing up facilities were above standard.
It is based within the grounds of a shopping mall and garden centre, which visitors came to every day, and breakfast could be smelled cooking from around 7am, so if you wanted to treat yourself, it’s worth while going there.
Every morning we experienced the morning call of the many different kinds of birds, but we love that kind of thing.
It is in an ideal spot for visiting the Broads and there is a pub half an hours walk and a chip shop and Premier supermarket half an hours walk the other way
The showers and toilets are unisex but that was what we knew before we went. Wasn’t a problem. They are private. And probably the best showers we have had.
All in all, it is worth the money we paid and we had a brilliant time
Will be returning

Disliked Couldn’t get Wi-Fi, but yet again, we knew this when booking
To be honest, we made conversation with each other more than we do at home.
5 star for that

Electric grass pitch

Liked It was very quiet, not so busy on our weekend visit. We didn't stay in one place all day because we came for a coastal walk, which is a 25-30 minute drive away. You'll find a Premier store about 1 mile away in the village. They open the upstairs cafe for public access around 9-10 AM. There were a lot of people at breakfast time.

The toilets (three individual units plus one accessible) and showers (two individual units) are very clean. There's also a water tap outside.

Very-very poor signal on EE and poor on Vodafone. Didn't request access for the wifi. Found out this is a problem in the entire area, not only on this site.

Truly recommended, although I'm not sure how busy the site gets at other times

Local attractions

Nosy about Norwich (15 minutes’ drive)? Those of you who aren’t familiar with this cultural city will find there’s much to stick your nose into, from bargain hunting around the old market to a full-on shopping trip or a pitstop tour of the independent eateries and historic sites… the highlight reel includes the hilltop Norwich Castle and the 11th-century cathedral. Those of you who are keen to weave a bit of the seaside into your way will want to head on over to the sandy beach and dunes at Winterton beach (35 minutes) or onto Great Yarmouth (25 minutes). This seaside resort town is all about the traditional, including a funfair, sandy beaches and the Sea Life Great Yarmouth aquarium. Once you’ve picked out those colourful fishies in the tanks, bigger animals wander around the local wildlife parks and zoos. Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens (25 minutes) has red pandas, tigers and leopards among them, while Pettitts Animal Adventure Park (25 minutes) couples up snakes, wallabies and alpacas with rides and playgrounds.
