  • Environmentally aware site set over six acres of Norfolk countryside
  • Five minutes' drive from North Walsham; 15 mins from Mundesley beach
  • Firewood available; 1.5 miles to Weavers' Way trail and rail station
Looking for a break that'll make you feel as free as a bird? Swoop down for a stay at Magpie Meadow, a back to basics Norfolk site with fab mega-sized pitches and far-reaching rural views. The site is also conveniently located 15 minutes’ drive from top coastal spots like Mundesley and Bacton beach. You can expect a warm welcome and relaxed vibe here – this site bills itself as 'family-friendly, dog-friendly, cat-friendly… and generally friendly'. It's also an eco-friendly place within easy reach of public transport options: those skipping the car can arrive via North Walsham railway station (20 minutes' walk), then get out and about on miles of bike-friendly trails (including the nearby Quiet Lanes Network and car-free Weavers' Way). This community-run spot is run on the basis that 'nature does it best'; as such, the site is proud that it's totally free of tarmac tracks and manicured hedges. Parts of the grounds are also gradually being rewilded with native flowers and trees, and limits on guest numbers mean that the whole middle of the meadow is always left as clear as it looks in the photos. In terms of facilities, Magpie Meadow is low on frills, with just two flushing loos, a low-impact shower, drinking water and a washing-up point provided; you're welcome to bring your own toilet with you. Barbecues are allowed here (as long as they're at least 60cm/two feet off the ground and burning charcoal only) and bundles of sustainably sourced logs are available to buy on site (although please note campfires may be banned during particularly hot and dry weather).

Electric grass pitch (woodland)

Liked Our visit to Magpie Meadow was perfect in every way. Tina and James were so helpful, kind and friendly.
Great dog walks directly from the campsite - the little info hut had all that you needed to be able to do them.
The rechargeable showers were brilliant - there is now hot water on site which made filling the bucket effortless.
The pitches were all a good size with a lovely ‘wild’ area of grass between each one. We stayed on a woodland EHU which gave us our very own garden with picnic bench and fire pit (logs can be purchased).
The site was kept immaculately clean, yet still keeping to the eco ethos. This is one of the best sites we have ever stayed at….we will be back!
Thank you so much for a FABULOUS weekend…

Electric grass pitch (woodland)

Liked We received a wonderfully warm and friendly welcome on arrival, which continued throughout our stay. The facilities were immaculate and exceptionally well maintained. Our pitch was fantastic—we especially loved the neatly mown area surrounded by beautiful meadow grass. The little piece of private woodland was an amazing thought too. It’s clear that Tina and James put a tremendous amount of care and effort into keeping this place so clean, tidy, and inviting. A thoughtful touch was the bucket provided for collecting recyclable waste (we’ll definitely be getting one ourselves!).

Disliked Some fellow campers showed a lack of respect for others’ privacy and personal space on their pitches. This isn’t a reflection on the owners—just the inconsiderate behaviour of a few individuals.

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked Spacious pitched close to nature, good accessibility by car. Good toilets and fire pits.
Nice location close to the sea (15 minutes by car)

Disliked No hot water and no hot showers.
Limited possibilities to walk into nature as the walking path that supposed to start at the campsite was blocked by people who said it was private

From the manager: Thank you for your review and we are very pleased you enjoyed your stay .
We clearly say on the information on the pitch up site we do not have hot water ! For our campers who like the low impact camping experiences this doesn’t cause a concern .
Unfortunately you took an over grown service track to the campsite which is private . We have many public footpaths which take you through the Nofolk county side one which runs directly from our gate from the campsite into North Walsham . This clearly was a miss understanding we have lots of information in the campsite hut on footpaths and the local area or any of the staff could have advised you .

Meadow non-electric grass pitch

Liked Really spacious pitches and lovely owners - they couldn’t have been nicer and more helpful! It’s very back to basics but we liked that.

Disliked It can be a little noisy due to the road but it isn’t too bad (we were in a tent) the showers are very basic with just a hand pump (not a dislike just an observation!)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your great review. Magpie Meadow is a low impact campground and very much back to basics. Our aim is to steer away from the commercial cramped sites where you can enjoy being back to nature.

Local attractions

Touring the Norfolk countryside on foot is a top-notch pursuit, whether that involves taking a constitutional on the peaceful country lanes around the site or day-long treks along the length and breadth of the car-free Weavers’ Way (five minutes' drive). Seaside strolls can also be arranged if you settle down here; the stretch of coast between Bacton and Mundesley is particularly pleasant (both 20 minutes). Boating in the Broads is another brill bet, especially if you're curious about the area's birdlife. Wroxham (20 minutes) has several local businesses that hire out vessels for the day, but professionally organised cruises are also on offer if your rowing skills leave something to be desired. Wroxham Barns (15 minutes) is also worth dropping by – this one-stop attraction is home to a shopping village, kids’ play farm and several food outlets. Newcomers curious about the area's history can head down to Felbrigg Hall (15 minutes), a rather regal National Trust estate. The community-run Museum of the Broads (15 minutes), meanwhile, houses well-preserved examples of the craft that cruised these waters in days gone by.
