  • Back to nature camping in a secluded Norfolk meadow
  • Five minutes' drive from Beccles; Southwold half an hour
  • Quiet site with rewilded areas for nature and privacy
What's that rustling in the long grass? At The Wildings Elms Meadow, it could be any number of birds, mammals or insects, as this peaceful site in the quiet East Anglian countryside is passionate about protecting the local area's biodiversity. Plenty of areas around this small-scale site have been left aside for nature, including a wildlife pond with a viewing platform. You're welcome to explore the grounds during your stay here – the little ones may particularly like the wooden playhouse hidden away in the greenery… With spacious and secluded pitches, The Wildings Elms Meadow is a place to escape the hectic pace of everyday life and tune into the rhythms of the natural world, from the dawn chorus in the morning to the crackling of a fire and stargazing at night (firepits are available for hire, and wood can be bought from site staff). Facilities here include a toilet and shower block, a communal kitchen area as well as access to running water and a washing-up area. Dogs are welcome to come and join you here, but they must be kept on leads at all times. Please note that parking is separate from the pitches to protect children and wildlife (wheelbarrows are available for arrivals and departures). The Wildings Elms Meadow is on the edge of the small village of Aldeby. For shops, pubs, restaurants and snacks, you're about three miles from the pretty little town of Beccles (five minutes' drive).

(2) electric grass tent pitch

Liked: A large open site with clean facilities and even a sitting room. Well run by a very pleasant lady. Close to a pub serving meals and only a short distance by bike to the town. Couldn't be better...

(1) electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely gorgeous, quiet campsite. We had a huge plot overlooking a large pond. There was an abundance of wildlife, we had a hedgehog snuffling round and saw bats and an owl. Lovely spot for stargazing. Really safe for our kids to run about. They made friends with the kids in the next tent and we could relax and let them play knowing there were no cars coming near the pitches. The toilets and showers were clean and showers were hot. It didn’t run out of loo roll and I liked the fact there were extensive opportunities to recycle. We’d all love to return to this campsite and I think it’s my favourite campsite to date and we’ve stayed at a few over the years.

Disliked: Nothing

(1) electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The layout is fantastic, each pitch has loads of space and it's lovely for grass and trees between each pitch. Very welcoming to children, who loved the Wendy house.

Disliked: Only three small toilets with a shower in each, a bit problematic when all showers are in use and you or child need the loo.

(2) electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything! The campsite was clean, well maintained and the facilities were all very thoughtfully arranged. Best showers we have ever had on a campsite and we have been camping in our tent for many years! Lots of local wildlife in and around the campsite and it was a good location for visiting The Broads and Beaches. Anissa and Kevin were available if required but not overbearing. Very welcoming and friendly. We will definitely be putting this campsite on our list of ones to return to.

Disliked: There wasn't anything to dislike.

Foxglove shepherd's hut

Liked: Very pretty campsite with glamping pod and shepherds huts. Small and thoughtfully laid out so that each pitch/hut had privacy and was set in its own area screened by hedges, trees and wildflowers. We stayed in the Foxglove shepherds hut which exceeded all expectations. The huts are allocated their own private WC, shower and kitchenette along with fridge, microwave, toaster, single ring hot plate plus lots of other little thoughtful extras. For cooking outside there was a small wooden canopy area for a single burner camping gas stove (supplied). The tents have access to shared kitchen facilities and washroom/showers. Theres even an honesty shop and fire pits available. We found plenty of lovely trails for running or walking and very quiet roads for cycling. Only a 3-4 mile cycle into Beccles for niche shops and cafes and a lovely river. Even closer is a lovely gastro pub and farm shop.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike!

Dragonfly shepherd's hut

Liked: We had a lovely stay in the dragonfly sheperd's hut! Great attention to detail and a lot of effort and care have obviously gone into creating and maintaining the site and the hut. It was very pretty and comfortable and everything you could need was there for a short stay was there somehow as if by magic. Having our own private bathroom in the toiletblock felt really posh and the shower was lovely! There was plenty of space around the hut and it felt private. We had a lovely sit around the fire pit and ate outside. We spoke briefly with one of the hosts upon arrival and were given some great tips on where to go and good places to eat. The area is lovely for views and walks and a short drive to some lovely beaches. We highly recommend The Wildings Elms Meadow and hope to come back again soon!

Foxglove shepherd's hut

Liked: Absolutely fantastic little site in a great location . We stayed in the foxglove Shepard’s hut at very short notice - was absolutely spotless- very quiet site Took my 15 year old son for a couple of nights away who loved it ! But was small but had everything in it There was enough room just for a camp bed on the floor Extra little touches like bottle of Prosecco on arrival , good tea and coffee and biscuit selection Under the bed all the pots pans and a little gas stove to cook on - even a box of games - scrabble , cards etc The pitch was secluded and spacious just off the pitch was an allocated kitchenette with shower and toilet , cooking facilities and fridge etc Lovely little honesty shop with a few basics in - eggs ice lollies and all important marshmallows for the fire pit! Very quiet to sit out and star gaze at night Very close to Beccles - nice little town my son enjoyed the India restaurant and the snooker / pool centre Very close to pleasure wood hills , a golf course with driving range , karting and Yarmouth please it’s beach for the older ones Thanks for an amazing short break

Disliked: Absolutely nothing except leaving!

Local attractions

There's lots to do in the local area, starting with the gorgeous Norfolk and Suffolk coast. The pretty seaside resort of Southwold (25 minutes' drive) is a great place to start, while nearby Walberswick (35 minutes) is a top pick for crabbing with the kids. If you're after a wild, natural beach that's great for a walk or picnic, try Covehithe (25 minutes), a mix of sand and shingle. This site is also right on the edge of The Broads National Park, so hire a boat in Beccles (five minutes), try paddleboarding in Wroxham (40 minutes), or bring your binoculars and head off birdwatching at any one of the many nature reserves dotted around the surrounding area. Kids coming away with you will almost certainly appreciate trips to BeWILDerwood Norfolk (40 minutes) in the Broads too – it's got trails, swings and other forest-themed activities that are bound to keep them entertained for hours. Time in town is easily arranged if you feel like a change of scene, whether you're heading to Norwich (35 minutes) for a wander around its castle and cathedral or fancy visiting breweries in Ipswich (an hour) or shopping in Bury St Edmunds (an hour).
