  • Glamping site next to wildflower meadows at a four-acre family farm
  • A 15-minute drive to Cambridge, or half an hour cycle ride
  • Firepit and a woodburning stove for each unit
What a gorgeous spot for a glamping break – the stylish outdoor accommodation at Fen Meadows is set up in secluded wildflower meadows, with fabulous views over the Cambridgeshire countryside. This lovely location is part of a four-acre farm just outside the village of Lode (a tiny place but still big enough to host a food pub, 10 minutes’ walk from the site). With lots of outdoor space to relax in and sweeping views over the open fields you’ll probably feel like you’ve landed in the middle of nowhere – and yet it’s only a 15-minute drive (or a half-hour cycle) to Cambridge when you fancy spending some time exploring one of England’s great cities. Soaking up that rural atmosphere should be nice and easy, whether you head out into the local area on foot or bikes, take one of the farm’s rowing boats out for a paddle or settle down on site to chill out. You’re welcome to take wanders through the farm’s various meadows (which are full of bees and butterflies flitting around the flowers) or flop into a deck chair in the orchard to read a book or snooze. All the accommodation is set up to make for a truly relaxing stay, too – each one sleeps up to four, with top-quality bed linen, duck down duvets, bath robes and fluffy towels provided. There’s a woodburning stove and oil heater inside, so you’ll always have somewhere nice and warm to retreat to, but it’s likely that you’ll want to hang out in the fresh air if possible… especially when you note the presence of a firepit outside…

Local attractions

Need a little help to get into ‘relaxed holiday’ mode? There’s a spa housed in an old mill five minutes' drive away where you can unwind with some time spent in the sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. And maybe a little tipple would help too? If so, take a tour of award-winning Chilford Hall Vineyard (20 minutes' drive) and pick up a bottle of local wine for your evening back at base. Elsewhere around the local area, you should definitely stop in at Anglesey Abbey (20 minutes’ walk), a National Trust property with 98 acres of landscaped grounds and a working mill. For more on the nature front, visit Wicken Fen Nature Reserve (25 minutes’ drive), a wetland site that's home to lots of rare butterflies, birds and dragonflies. And of course one mustn’t miss a trip to Cambridge (15 minutes' drive or borrow bikes on site), to take a look at the famed colleges, visit the various museums and see if you can master the art of punting along the river.

Honey Bee bell tent

Liked: Location to get to Cambridge is ok

Disliked: Facilities are not as advertised. Overpriced for what it is. Dirty, dusty tent with holes in netting. Bio toilets with floating poo. Showers made of some sheets in open air with some, not having a roof over the head. Overgrown grass. Didn’t see the owner/ receptionists where upon arrival I was told over the phone to find and proceed to the tent. Neglected site with no interest in guest or reviews from the owners. Never will stay again. I’ve stayed in eco camps and I thought I’ve seen everything. Was not prepared for such disaster where I feel I was robbed and defiantly would like to have at least half of my money back. Traveling to shops to use the toilet is not right when I’ve payed more than 100 pounds for a night. Owners are either on long holiday themselves or, are not interested in their business. Disaster.

Honey Bee bell tent

Liked: Staff.. so kind and friendly. Keen to help.
Needs: nice to sleep on a proper bed

Disliked: Kitchen: it’s a basic gas cooker, so only one family/unit can cook at a time. There are 9!! Units. Only a basic under counter fridge…. Again imagine trying to get 9 families food/drink in there… bit of a bun fight! Upside is a lovely covered open air kitchen seating space.

Sanitation: No sanitary bins in loos. Also are just basic camping toilets £50 from go outdoors!, often with other people’s poop still in them , and one of the four has a toilet seat that slid off! Not the kind of loo you would ever want to do a number 2 in. Not something I would ever want to do again .. left after 1 night of a three night booking.

Location: it’s on a rutted field with desiccated dog! Poop, upside quiet area.

Pitch: surrounded by grass and weeds.. perfect for the insects though

Accommodation; cool bell tents, pity stove inside was full of ash that needed scooping out by hand with “holy” oven gloves. No electric.. lacking what you think was glamping basics .. ie for glamorous camping!! Had to remove screws sticking up on tent decking to avoid having to visit hospital with shredded feet! Luckily found hammer and screwdriver under kitchen sink.

Showers: did the job nicely, pity only one out of two had shower gel (though not something would expect at a basic campsite anyway). One of the showers had a nice green mould growing around the drain .. see picture!

Sinks: to wash hands after using the loos are outside and you need your own hand soap .. plan ahead and think of the weather!

Other reviews mentioned chickens eggs available for breakfast… found a run down chick coop with 3 run down huts and one lonely chicken… not sure the poor thing had any egg laying left in it.

Orchard View bell tent

Liked: The tent was exactly as described with lots of little touches like healthy fruit juice for the kids and coffee for the adults. The bedding was lovely and warm. The owners were incredibly responsive and answered all of our questions quickly and efficiently. Bathroom facilities were clean.

Disliked: The hot water in the shower was a little bit too hot and the kids couldn’t have a proper shower as a result. It wasn’t possible to adjust the temperature.

Honey Bee bell tent

Liked: The location is just lovely and facilities offer everything you could need. Beds are very comfy with quality feather bedding!

So enjoyed building my own fire and just relaxing with a book while it crackled away!

Units are a good distance apart so retain a reasonable element of privacy and plenty of space to play games so great for kids..and dogs for that matter!

Best part was the staff though, especially Eddie who manages the place; he works his socks off all day and will help with absolutely anything you might need!

Disliked: Not a dislike, more advice - if you’re staying in a yurt with wood burner, be sure to look for the flue valve lever on the chimney and open it up or you’ll end up smoked out! 😁

Tree Dreams cabin

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Turned up with no instructions sent to us it was my partners birthday. We arrived to no one greeting or anything, we eventually found our cabin which was spider infested and the the hot tub was really filthy. We rang the number on pitchup.com to be told it was an old employee who no longer works there and was given the number for the owner. He did give us a full refund and told us they didn’t realise they had a booking, he was very nice after but the whole experience ruined my partners birthday, we traveled very far to what we thought would be a nice weekend away, will certainly not be staying ever again or recommend for anyone.
Very out dated photos on the website the site looks nothing like this and is very unsafe for children with broken steps and missing parts to the walk.

We found a lodge an hour away with a private garden and hot tub with very modern decor for the same price

Deer Run cabin

Liked: I loved how friendly the staff were and the location was perfect! People may be sceptical at first about outdoor showers and toilets but they were decorated to such clean perfection! I thoroughly enjoyed the stay I had here and I would recommend to anyone and will be back again!
The cabin itself was stunning and warm with the nice little touches really made our stay feel more warm and welcome. The hot-tub was great looking out to the vast fields making it a perfect location for the deer run cabin!
I cannot express enough how friendly and willing to help if you had any needs the staff were.
All round a perfect weekend away from the city.

Honey Bee bell tent

Liked: After being on the road for three weeks, on two sites in modern tents and also a Tr@velodge, this was my reward to myself and the best of all of those. Ridiculously comfy bed and a quiet site. Visited Ely Cathedral and Denny Abbey / fenland farming museum, then just watched the firepit as night fell. Lovely.

Disliked: The stove was smoky as I couldn’t control the draw. Better second night though.

Deer Run cabin

Liked: The accommodation was gorgeous and comfortable with loads of rustic charm, and clearly some thought put in to the little details. Beautiful view from the hot tub too! Very very soft and comfortable bedding. Just the right size but for everything we needed, to say we travelled with a 5 month old baby.
LOVED the cute little board games in the cupboard too. Very much appreciated when the weather was too bad to enjoy the tub!
The communal kitchen was fully stocked with all utensils, pans and crockery you could possibly need. Plus charging area and hot drink facilities for the tents that didn’t have electricity. A very cool addition to a glamping site that you don’t always see.
The toilet/shower facilities were clean and well stocked at all times, and more than just a big standard shower block at a camp site. Pretty decorations, luxurious feeling shampoo, conditioner, shower gel on offer, and something really quite peaceful about showering partially outdoors.

Due to bad weather we didn’t explore the local area much - however very friendly locals in the White Swan pub, which is worth a visit. Food looked ace too.

Bad weather did not put us off at all - we had a perfect weekend of recharging ourselves, this site was absolutely perfect for that. Glad we booked two nights as would have been too hard to leave after just the one.

Wood burning hot tub fired up and warm on arrival which was lovely. The staff were quick to help and very friendly when we couldn’t get it going again ourselves on day 2.

No Wi-Fi and poor signal, but honestly it’s probably not the place to come if you just wanna be on your device the whole time so it didn’t bother us.

Overall, could not fault this place and would love to come back. Highly highly recommend!
