  • Peaceful and family-friendly campsite in Staffordshire countryside
  • Direct access to the Newcastle Way; a 45-minute drive to Alton Towers
  • Barbecues allowed; 20 minutes’ walk to pubs and a park
You may be looking for a patch of land to put your feet up or somewhere that has long-distance hikes and waterparks and to get your blood pumping… and, thankfully, you won’t need to compromise on either at Spring Bank Campsite in handsome rural Staffordshire. Your stay here can be as totally relaxing or as energetic as you choose, whether it’s lounging about the pitches or opening up your tent and hopping over the stile onto the Newcastle Way. Part of a hamlet of farms, fields and cottages, there’s a cosy and characterful feel at this family-friendly site, thanks to the cows and calves in the field, the trundle of tractors on the lane and a friendly cockerel keeping tabs on you. Rural this may very well be – but it’s not quite wild camping as the level grass pitches are next door to the owners’ cottage, and you have the use of their outside tap and downstairs loo. Handily, barbecues are allowed here and you’ll be able to pick up essentials in Madeley five minutes’ drive away. Cyclists can pick up tracks at Bateswood Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive), and there are golf courses, tennis courts and a swimming pool all within a 15-minute drive of the site. There are a couple of pubs a 20-minute walk away in Madeley Heath, with hot food and pool tables available – and a park and playing field around the corner for children to run around in.

Local attractions

There’s a lot around for kids here. You could let them loose on the BMX track in Kidsgrove (half an hour’s drive) or the waterslides, thrill rides and wave pool at the tropical-themed Waterworld (20 minutes). And then, not for the faint-hearted, there are the rollercoasters at Alton Towers (45 minutes) for more adrenaline-inducing days out. Now, nature isn’t one to be missed either. You’ll want to keep your eyes peeled around the Bateswood Nature Reserve (10 minutes). Keele University Arboretum and Woodland Walk (10 minutes) has another lovely little trail where you can learn about plant life at the same time. If you thought monkey forests were far away from this corner of Staffordshire, you’ll be in for a treat at Trentham Estate (20 minutes). Once you’re done with the walking trails and the treetop adventure course, there’s also a shopping village and 140 Barbary macaques in the monkey forest. How about a local landmark? Mow Cop Castle (30 minutes) is over 350 metres above sea level, meaning this ruin has really far-reaching views. There’s a trail around the National Trust site so you’ll gather history tidbits along the way.
