Hardstanding pitch

  • Large hardstanding pitches on a Staffordshire working farm near Stone
  • World of Wedgwood 20 minutes’ drive; Alton Towers half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; dog-walking and dog-grooming service available on site
Hands up who’s after a peaceful family retreat in the splendid Staffordshire countryside. Well, you can stop looking – and get booking at Woodview. This caravan site sits on the edge of a working farm in Morrillow Heath, one of six hamlets making up the parish of Leigh, a 15-minute drive from the market town of Stone. Hardstanding pitches (which come with electric hook-up and water points, not to mention rural views) can comfortably accommodate one vehicle and an awning. In addition to a shed housing a communal fridge and a washing-up area with hot water, there are spotlessly maintained toilet facilities. However, please note that there are no showers on site. Canine buddies are welcome, though they will have to be kept on a lead at all times. What’s more, owners Claire and Dave offer a dog-walking service as well as a dog-grooming service, so you don’t have to worry about leaving your dog behind while you check out some of the attractions in the vicinity, from Shugborough Estate (25 minutes’ drive) to Alton Towers theme park (half an hour). Of course, there are also plenty of places to explore with your dog at your side, including the woodland at Dimmingsdale Valley, the hills and heathland at Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (both half an hour) and Staffordshire Moorlands District (35 minutes), just on the outskirts of Peak District National Park. There are supermarkets and independent shops in both Stone and Uttoxeter, which also have plenty of dining options should you wish to give cooking a miss.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nice and peaceful, location good for stone, trentham gardens. Pubs not too far, about 1.7mile to nearest one. Toilet facilities are ok. Washing up facilities ok. Pitches are on a slight incline, need levellers. Toilet waste empty point. Very helpful handyman onsite. Very friendly. Country lanes very narrow to site. We will use again and again.

Disliked: Narrow lanes

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Very quiet, well spaced pitches. Washing up facilities and toilets available.

Disliked: Not a walk to the pub as stated, which we were banking on for our evening meal. Expensive really.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The site owner very helpful, site well maintained and toilets although a little old cosmetically they were very clean and tidy. Our second stay here and excellent value. Also great location for Alton Towers.

Disliked: The pitches have a slight gradient, not a huge issue for us as we have ramps for the van but perhaps a consideration if you don't.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful little site. Claire welcomed us with a nice text directing us to the site. Lovely a peaceful for a few hours to get our head down en route back home to Devon from Scotland.

Disliked: The toilets need a bit of attention as they are unisex ones. Clean and tidy though. Unfortunately the WiFi wasn’t working due to an electrical issue which Claire did mention. 4G a bit dodgy too.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Quiet site, toilets clean, grass nice and short for dogs, decent site pitches.

Disliked: Unfortunately WiFi not working when there. Single small dustbin for all pitches. Scout campsite across the lane, so noise until approx 10.30pm - and conversations started again just after 5am. Nothing these owners can affect, but did spoil this quiet site

Local attractions

When in Staffordshire, pottery-related activities are a must. At World of Wedgwood (20 minutes’ drive) you can take a guided tour of the factory to see how their iconic pieces are crafted. If you find that inspiring, you can have a go at throwing a pot yourself or get creative with paint in the decorating studio. Go to Trentham Estate (25 minutes) for the award-winning gardens and stay for the shopping village made up of quaint timber huts. In between, you can take a stroll along the Capability Brown-designed lake, check out the wildlife (from deer to woodpeckers, plus the primates at Monkey Forest) and follow the kids on the Fairy Trail (or let them loose in the adventure playground). Grab your swimsuit and head to Waterworld (35 minutes), where wave pools, lazy rivers and all sorts of watery slides (from the toddler-friendly Python to the thrilling Thunderbolt drop water flume) await.
