If you’re heading to the Peak District National Park in search of some gorgeous views, then you’ll need to take a look at this place. The campsite at Lapwing Hall Farm is surrounded by stunning scenery and has a wonderful backdrop of The Roaches, a dramatic ridge about three miles away. Sitting just inside the boundary of the national park, this Staffordshire campsite is well placed for walks and other outdoor pursuits – and with Leek about 10 minutes’ drive away it’s also in a handy spot for shops, restaurants and other useful amenities. Not that you have to go that far in search of provisions, as the adjacent farm has milk, eggs, bread and other basic farm produce for sale. It’s a fairly simple setup here to preserve the peaceful vibe, but you’ll have access to a water supply, portable toilets and waste-emptying facilities. Barbecues are welcome and you can serve up your meals on the picnic tables provided.And if you don’t fancy cooking (or the weather isn’t up to much) you can seek refuge in the local pub, five minutes’ walk away, for a meal and a drink. This is a laidback spot that welcomes kids, groups and dogs – and it’s the kind of place that you can use as a base for all sorts of trips, whether you’re planning to hike, ride bikes, try the watersports at nearby Tittesworth Reservoir or hit attractions like Alton Towers, Peak Wildlife Park and the nostalgic Churnet Valley Railway.

Local attractions

Being within the Peak District National Park, this site is well placed for lots of great walking trails. Once you’ve seen The Roaches (10 minutes’ drive) from afar, head up there for a hike or perhaps a bit of climbing – either way, there are stunning views from here all the way to north Wales on a clear day. Places like Hen Cloud (10 minutes), Thor's Cave (25 minutes) and Lathkill Dale (half an hour) are other good options for a walk nearby – perhaps followed by a dip in Blake Mere Mermaid Pool (10 minutes). Rudyard Lake (10 minutes) has fishing, sailing and a lakeside railway, and there are several watersports activities at Tittesworth Reservoir (five minutes), including canoeing and paddleboarding. For kid-friendly days out, the likes of Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes) and Alton Towers (25 minutes) should win lots of points, as should steam-powered rides on the Churnet Valley Railway (20 minutes). For grownup guests, a stroll around elegant Buxton (20 minutes) is a lovely idea.
