Minton Hill Pods: Fire Bowl

General

  • Quiet, purpose-built camping pods in the Shropshire Hills
  • Hike 50 minutes to Carding Mill Valley
  • Firepit and gas cooker provided; three pubs and lots of trails nearby

It’s pretty darn peaceful at Minton Hill Pods in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Just step outside, ready your hiking boots or bicycle and choose from the many quiet, sleepy country lanes surrounding this purpose-built camping pods site.

Tucked four miles south of Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd, some tracks will take you all the way to the purple, heather-carpeted plateau. There’s wild swimming there if you’re brave enough, a welcome way to cool off after the 50-minute walk. Cyclists are a few hundred yards from the Minton Bach mountain bike trail, a well-regarded single-track ride that's within easy pedalling distance of base.

The Minton Hill Pods are in a remote, small and highly peaceful woodland on a family-run hill farm, down a short, solid stone track and half a mile south of Anglo-Saxon settlement of Minton. Solar panels power the lights and charging points in the pods, which are fully insulated and have room for two adults.

Simply stack the beds (bedding is provided) to maximise your space if you’re travelling alone – it’ll be like a single bed or a sofa. Stacking the beds this way also creates more room for cracking open a book or a game with your travel buddy. Of course, that’s only if you’re not taking advantage of the open firepit and gas cooking facilities that have been provided (sunset meals and stargazing, anyone?)

These off-grid pods have plenty of provisions, including drinking water on tap and access to well-maintained washing-up facilities, flushing toilets and hot showers. There’s firewood available for an additional cost, but please bring any fire lighting equipment, a powerful torch, cutlery, cooking utensils, pans and towels with you.

When you’re in search of other sustenance, tasty food and warm atmospheres can be tracked down at the pub in Marshbrook (15 minutes’ walk) or the two pubs in Little Stretton (half an hour. The market town of Church Stretton (five minutes’ drive) has cafés, a supermarket and more dining out options.

Safe, secure and spotlessly clean site. Amazing views and night sky with stars.
Everything provided for a cosy and comfortable stay. So close to the best walks and loveliest little towns.

Met the farmer who was very welcoming and knowledgeable about his local area.

Really looking forward to going back soon. Fire pit a huge bonus.

Very clean and in a lovely, quiet spot. Tom and his family were very friendly and welcoming. The little cooker worked well and it was nice to sit by the fire pit in the evening. The stars were spectacular when there was a clear sky.
Although it was quiet and wonderful not to be able to hear traffic, Little Stretton and Church Stretton were nearby and the site was an excellent location for walkers as it’s next to the Long Mynd. Everything was in good order and we were pleased that we booked the pod.

We liked everything there, seemed away from the outside world this little place. Best thing that it was only 2 pods, so it means there were no noise or partying from people around us.

    Disliked:

It was a bit of the challenge to collect a key from a lock on the pod, a key didn’t want to fit in there when we were leaving too.

The views of the rolling hills of Shropshire were fantastic and the pods are neatly nestled into some trees which provide additional shelter.

The facilities are all modern and very clean, it's lovely to have access to a hot shower and flushing toilet only yards away from your pod.

All the amenities are well thought through and work perfectly.

The pods are situated very close to the Long Mynd so it serves as a great base for people who want to walk, you can access Church Stretton by foot and Ludlow is only a 15-minute drive.

Genuinely I can't recommend this place enough. The hosts are also so so friendly and can't do enough for you.

Rural tranquillity at its best.08/25/2022

Minton Pods are just the rural green tranquility tonic we needed and we are going back for more next week! There were just two pods so very peaceful. Sheltered in the trees so we still sat by the campfire in a light shower. We had a view of the Shropshire Hills to gaze at in the afternoon and a very dark sky area so hoping for a clear night and stars when we go back. We could listen to the night sounds in the darkness of owls and different wildlife. The pods were tall enough to stand up in and big enough to put camping chairs in so if it rains you can still look out at the hills. Shower, toilet and washing up block, phone charging socket and a light in the pods.

The location is perfect for relax in the middle of nowhere. On the foot of the Shropshire Hills which have breathtaking views.
Covered all basis with chairs, Gas BBQ, Fire pit with ability to purchase fire wood (with kindling and fire lighters), just bring matches or lighter.
USB charging provided and lots of information regarding the local area.
Toilet and shower were spotless and washing up supplies were provided.
Simply have no faults and is brilliant value for money.

    Disliked:

Not a negative at all but just to note, maybe bring your own chair as the chairs provided are very low (more like deck chairs), we found our camping chairs much more comfortable. If you don’t have any, the bench is more than fine.

Local attractions

With a central Shropshire spot, it’s not tricky to track down attractions from Minton Hill Pods. Take in the countryside from a steam railway, like in the old days, by joining the Severn Valley Railway from its Bridgnorth station (40 minutes’ drive). Then, march on towards Stokesay Castle (25 minutes), where one of the richest men in England lived in the 13th century.

Museums can be tracked down in Ironbridge (40 minutes), medieval Powis Castle (50 minutes) or the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre (10 minutes). As for peaceful sightseeing and pottering around, Ludlow (25 minutes) and Shrewsbury (35 minutes) are excellent contenders for such activities.

When you’re not out biking or hiking the Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd, there’s also a popular, single-track cycling trail through Minton Batch (around 15 minutes’ cycle).

Must see

  • Stokesay Castle (8.7 kilometres)
  • Ludlow Castle (17.5 kilometres)
  • Much Wenlock Priory (21.1 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Carding Mill Valley and the Shropshire Hills (4.2 kilometres)
  • Wilderhope Manor (11.5 kilometres)
