Field with the pitches

  • Peaceful, nearly wild site with views of the Long Mynd plateau
  • Amid the Shropshire Hills, a 10-minute drive from Church Stretton
  • Half an hour from Shrewsbury and 35 minutes from Ludlow
What puts the ‘woah’ in Womerton Farm Campground? It’s got to be the views. Set in the middle of the Shropshire Hills, the Long Mynd looms right over the park – so you might very well spend a large chunk of your time here gazing at this mighty plateau from your pitch. Sceptical? Just look at the pics. It’s also clear from having a gander at those that this rural and peaceful park is a haven for hikers. It leads off to top-notch walking and cycling paths around the nearby heaths and moorlands, and is a short drive from trails through woodland, towards Iron Age hillforts and across craggy mountain ridges. Besides trekking, other pursuits to have a go at in this designated area of outstanding natural beauty include fishing and kayaking; if you’re interested in either, ask on site about access to local waterways and gear rentals. Hungry after energy-expending days out? Chug over to Church Stretton (10 minutes’ drive) to catch a weekly market selling some of the area’s best local produce. For meals out, peruse the menus at the eateries here or make your way to a pub a five-minute drive from the park. Please note that Womerton Farm Campground has compost toilets but no showers at the moment.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Loved being right in the heart of some of the most beautiful views and a hop over the road brings you to a stunning walk you could go for miles. Amazing wild camping that was secure. Ground is hilly so just choose a good pitch.

Liked: Beautiful location in a magical valley. Great that you have compost loos. We only stayed very briefly for one night but enjoyed waking to see the chickens. We like that there was a picnic bench we could use. Hope to be back again!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: If you like basic, unspoiled campsites, as I do, this is more or less perfection, just a (big) field with a tap, a bin and some composting loos, so much more pleasant than chemical. Great location, fine views, peaceful spot with access to hill walks. Don't tell everyone ;-]

Local attractions

Let’s talk walks. The Shropshire Hills area is a hub for hikers, so grab your sturdiest boots and get ready to take on the top terrain. There’s the Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd plateau (15 minutes’ drive), along with Wenlock Edge’s woodland scarp (half an hour) and the craggy Stiperstones ridge (35 minutes). For a side of history with your strolls, set off for the Iron Age hillfort at Caer Caradoc (10 minutes) or bound across Bodbury Ring on the opposite side of the Carding Mill Valley. Church Stretton was known as ‘Little Switzerland’ in the Victorian era because of the lush landscape, so learn about what rural life was like back then during the blacksmith demos at Acton Scott Historic Working Farm (15 minutes). Long-distance horse rider? Have a jaunt on the Jack Mytton Way instead, keeping an eye out for upland birds like curlew and red grouse as you ride. If you prefer peering at old buildings in pretty towns, look to Ludlow (35 minutes) and Shrewsbury (half an hour). Both settlements are full of independent boutiques, so they’re fab for admiring architecture while doing a spot of shopping.
