Family-run dog-friendly farm site in Cropredy village
A 20-minute drive to British Motor Museum; 40 mins to Blenheim Palace
Wood-fired pizzas on busy weekends; a short walk to pubs and cafés

Fancy a farm stay, but not so keen on the idea of navigating little country lanes? Set off to Oxfordshire and The Old Dairy Farm Caravan and Camping: getting here involves a mere 10-minute detour from the M40 at Banbury. That location makes this a most handy spot for motorway stopovers, but there’s plenty around to please those who choose to stay longer too. However long you stay at this family-run farm, you’ll not want to miss out on meeting the pygmy goats and free-range chickens and peering into the aviary; once the kids have done that, send them off for a proper run about on the large recreational field to tire them out before bedtime. Handy too are the smart and well-maintained facilities, including a toilet block, showers, a washing-up area, water supply and Elsan point. The wood-fired pizza oven gets going on busy weekends (and it’s also available for private hire if you’re having a gathering). Don’t worry if there’s no pizza action while you’re here: it’ll take just a few minutes to walk to Cropredy’s pubs, cafés and shop (or its play park). It’s also possible to walk to the Oxford Canal and River Cherwell for waterside wanders, and a short drive will get you out into the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for more walks, plus golf courses, fishing lakes and National Trust estates. In the main this is a peaceful site, but it's worth noting that a rail line passes fairly close by so you may hear a bit of noise from the pitches (or even spot trains – much to the delight of young rail enthusiasts).

Liked: The set up and staff was great. The goats, the dancing parrot and the birds I the aviary were a highlight. The children enjoyed the park and the onsite food was tasty.

Disliked: The toilet block down the bottom of the field, the locks need sorting, someone managed to pull the door open, with the latch on lock and see me having a wee, twice 😅

Liked: There were animals that attracted the children's attention and rabbits wandering around in front of them, which excited them all the time. My children, ages 5 and 3, enjoyed the freedom to roam around the caravan site.

From the manager: I find this hard to believe. A normal customer would have informed staff and ask to see the cctv. Considering the group are in a separate field with separate access they’re so called involvement would have been easy to prove. And as such I’ve checked and seen nothing. This group have been on short stays about 6 times in 4 years and we’ve never had a report of a theft, just persecution hence giving them their own field.

Local attractions

Coming to the Cotswolds for a bit of fresh air and gentle activity? Set forth for fishing at Clattercote Reservoir, or tee off at Cherwell Edge Golf Course; both are about 10 minutes away by car. Country walking routes are plentiful too, of course, as are fine buildings to mooch around. Blenheim Palace (40 minutes’ drive) is perhaps the best known of all the Oxfordshire stately homes (and with good reason, for ’tis fab) but it’s worth taking a look at some others too, including Farnborough Hall (10 minutes), Sulgrave Manor (20 minutes) and Upton House and Gardens (20 minutes). For a break from the classic Cotswolds activities, head out to meet the big birds of Fir Tree Falconry (15 minutes) or sigh over all the shiny machines at the British Motor Museum (20 minutes). And if you’re in need of a tipple or two to accompany your barbecue back at base, there are some excellent local ones to be acquired at Hook Norton Brewery (25 minutes) and the Cotswolds Distillery (half an hour).
