  • Naturist-friendly wild camping in a peaceful Nottinghamshire woodland
  • A 20-minute drive from Newark-on-Trent and Sherwood Forest
  • Off-grid site next door to a nature reserve with local wildlife
Looking to switch off properly the next time you go away? That’s what Wild Protea Woodland, a naturist-friendly site, is all about. Here, the order of the day is wild camping on off-grid pitches (with or without your clothes on). Set in an ancient Nottinghamshire woodland, the site has plenty of peace and quiet, as well as local wildlife in abundance. This is true wild camping, so there are no facilities here – just you, the rustling leaves and a splendidly starry sky on clear nights. A detailed map will be handed to you upon arrival so that you feel confident navigating the woodland retreat with your gear and essentials. With just the relaxing dawn and dusk bird chorus as background noise, it’s a quiet spot, although it's a convenient 25-minute drive from Mansfield and 45 minutes from Nottingham city centre. Should you want to dip into a town for supplies, Newark-on-Trent is a 20-minute drive away too. Fancy a peaceful stroll while you're here? Just next door is the Dukes Wood Nature Reserve And Oil Museum. If you have kids in tow, head to the 30-acre Robin Hoods Wheelgate Park (for theme park rides, crazy golf and other fun activities) or the White Post Farm (for animal encounters with the likes of alpacas and wallabies) – both are a 10-minute drive away. When you’re feeling thirsty, stop by one of the pubs within 10 minutes’ drive of the site.

Local attractions

The legendary stomping ground of Robin Hood, Sherwood Forest (20 minutes’ drive) is within striking distance, with plenty of walking and bike trails. One of its oak trees is estimated to be up to 1100 years old – surely that’s worth a trip alone. In Newark-on-Trent (20 minutes), step on board one of the barges for a day on the river Trent. If you'd rather stay on dry land, there are plenty of pubs and cafés to try out, as well as a 12th-century castle, an air museum and a historic marketplace to wander through. Newark Castle and Gardens (20 minutes) has gorgeous formal gardens on the banks of the river too. That's some history under your belt already, although if you still want more, the National Trust’s Clumber Park (20 minutes) has 3,800 acres of historic parkland for peaceful bike rides or walks. Creswell Crags (25 minutes) is another fine spot, with an archaeological museum, a cave and a limestone gorge once walked by Ice Age mammoths. With a café on site too, it’s easy to spend a whole afternoon there.
