  • Off-grid pop-up site set on the River Glen in Lincolnshire fenland
  • Moulton Windmill 25 minutes’ drive and Delaine Buses 10 minutes
  • Wildlife haven with watersports on the river and fishing next door
Set on an 18-acre Lincolnshire fenland smallholding, Charabanc Meadows is a relaxed pop-up site with pitches mown into long grass; they have plenty of room between them so you’ll never feel crowded. There are far-reaching countryside views from the camping field, and if you cast your eyes upwards, the sky is often full of buzzards, kites, falcons and cuckoos. If you’re lucky, you can also sometimes spot muntjac and red deer playing in the meadows and river in the early morning. If you don’t get to see any wildlife, don’t fret as the site owners have lambs, rabbits, goats and hens for you to meet – you can also pick fresh eggs, subject to chicken cooperation. Next to the camping field is the River Glen. You’re welcome to bring your own gear for self-propelling watersports like kayaking and paddleboarding – and next door you can go coarse fishing on a series of well-stocked ponds. There is a bore hole for fresh water, and while the site is off-grid you can borrow solar-powered packs for charging phones. If you need a firepit, they are available too. Barbecue on the cards? Pick up whatever you need in Bourne or Spalding (both 10 minutes’ drive). Charabanc Meadows runs alongside the A151, so there is some traffic noise at busy times. Escape to the other side of the riverside dyke and your peace will be undisturbed.

Local attractions

Along with non-motorised watersports on the River Glen, there’s lots of active stuff to do locally. There are cycle rides and riverside walks right from the pitches, coarse fishing right next door and brisk hikes along the Norfolk coastline – coastal Fosdyke Wash (half an hour) is a good bet for spotting protected bitterns and harriers. Turning to culture, Moulton Windmill (25 minutes’ drive) was built in 1822 and is the UK’s tallest working mill; book ahead of time for guided tours up 96 steps for spectacular views over the fens. Close by is Gordon Boswell Romany Museum (15 minutes), with traditional wagons providing a fascinating glimpse into Romany heritage. There’s more vintage transport at Delaine Buses (10 minutes), where you can mooch around 19th-century coaches and take a historic bus trip out into the fenland countryside. Also well-worth visiting, the Museum of Technology, the History of Gadgets and Gizmos (35 minutes) houses a vast display of antique TVs, telephones and typewriters.
