  • Adults-only touring pitches at a retirement livery in Lincolnshire
  • Whisby Nature Park five minutes’ drive; Lincoln 20 minutes
  • Well-behaved dogs are welcome; Auburn village pub five minutes’ drive
Grab your partner (or a best friend), make sure that everything in your motorhome is working as it should, then head to the Lincolnshire countryside. Here, halfway between Lincoln and Newark-on-Trent (about 20 minutes’ drive to either along the A46) is peaceful High Walks Farm. Pitches at this adults-only spot sit in a woodland glade with views over fields and paddocks. Speaking of paddocks… the site owners also run a retirement livery, so please refrain from feeding the horses, and always keep your dog under control. Of course, you’re welcome to admire the resident equines – as well as the wildlife that might scuttle past or fly overhead. There are plenty of excellent places in the vicinity for a walk, and dogs are allowed at many of them. They include Whisby Nature Park (five minutes), a former quarry whose pits have been flooded and are now home to warblers, sand martins and terns; Tunman Wood (10 minutes), where bluebell meadows spread in the shade of tall oaks; and Besthorpe Nature Reserve (20 minutes), an area of wetlands inhabited by cormorants and herons. If birds are what you’re into, kingfishers and egrets (plus otters) are often spotted at RSPB Langford Lowfields (10 minutes), another reclaimed quarry. However, please note that dogs are not allowed here. In the evening, drive the five minutes to Aubourn for a pint and a pie at the village pub, or visit the eateries in Witham St Hughs, Bassingham or the south-western edges of Lincoln (five to ten minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

Doddington Hall & Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) is an imposing Elizabethan country house with three distinctive dome-topped turrets, topiary unicorns in the garden and woodland walks. Wildflowers, azaleas and rhododendrons grow naturally in the Wild Garden. Events include opera and drama performances on the lawn and supper clubs. In Lincoln (20 minutes), walk up cobbled Steep Hill (not a misnomer – the hill has a 14 per cent gradient) to reach the 11th-century cathedral. If you still have some puff after Steep Hill, you can climb the 300 steps to the tower for far-reaching views of the city and countryside. If you’re into animal-based experiences but don’t fancy visiting a zoo or safari park, J and J Alpacas (25 minutes) arranges relaxing alpaca treks through woodland and past ponds. The on-site shop sells alpaca wool and knitwear, plus an assortment of alpaca-themed souvenirs.
