  • Pop-up budget campsite near medieval Weobley village in Herefordshire
  • On the Black and White Village Trail and a 25-minute drive to Hereford
  • Animals on site, pubs, takeaways, shops and rural walks nearby
A budget choice for overnight tourers, cyclists and backpackers, Emily’s Meadow Camping is tucked away on a four-acre smallholding in North Herefordshire countryside. Your new neighbours at this peaceful spot are likely to be the ponies, inquisitive goats and lambs that live on site. It’s strictly a back-to-basics affair with portable toilets only; you can park by the grass pitches though, and there’s plenty locally to keep you fed and watered. The village of Weobley (five minutes’ drive) turns up a pub and a couple of takeaways, as well as a handy store for picking up basics. Weobley is right on Herefordshire’s Black and White Village Trail, with plenty of half-timbered medieval houses lining the streets. Follow this 40-mile route on foot or bike, or take a circular footpath around the village, walking through woodland to the grounds of Garnstone Park (five minutes) to nose around the kitchen gardens. You can be practising your swing on a golf course or belting around a go-kart circuit in less than 10 minutes – and if you’re travelling with the kids, chances are they’d be happy to meet the donkeys at the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (20 minutes).

Local attractions

The county town of Hereford (25 minutes’ drive) sits on the banks of the River Wye and its cathedral is home of the medieval Mappa Mundi and Chained Library. There are lovely riverside walks, plus indie shops to explore along Church Street – and if you hit the odd rainy day, there’s a cinema and theatre too. You can’t move for majestic houses and parkland in Herefordshire. Westonbury Mill Water Gardens (20 minutes) has madcap mosaic follies, while Hampton Court Castle (25 minutes) is a glorious mash up of Elizabethan and Victorian architecture with a notoriously difficult maze. Once you’ve found the kids again, they can run around and let off steam in Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum (20 minutes), an ideal spot for family picnics too. You get to sample the wares after a guided tour of Chase Gin Distillery (35 minutes) and can learn about the cider-making process and vintage machinery at the Hereford Cider Museum Trust (25 minutes).
