  • Peaceful rural site on a working farm in the village of Canon Frome
  • A 10-minute drive to Ledbury; 20 minutes to Great Malvern
  • Pitch your tent among pretty flowers; access to public footpaths
A sweet spot between the Malvern Hills and Wye Valley Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty is bound to be an enticing one for those looking for a scenic Herefordshire stay – and that’s exactly the location of Lower House Farm, a working farm in the village of Canon Frome. Its setting makes this a pretty spot indeed for those seeking rural views and country walks – footpaths run from just outside the site, and cut across to a stretch of the Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal. Meanwhile, the edges of both the aforementioned AONBs are about 10 minutes’ drive away, so there are plenty of options around for lengthy walks or bike rides. Change of scenery? The market towns of Ledbury and Great Malvern are close by (10/20 minutes’ drive respectively), and the cities of Hereford and Worcester both around half an hour’s drive away for wanders around historic buildings. Getting out to wherever you choose should be pretty straightforward, as the farm is just a little way from the A417. While exploring the area is thoroughly recommended, it’s also a good idea to factor in some time spent on site, as it’s a rather lovely spot to relax in. Close to apple orchards and accessible from the public footpath network, the campsite is backed by sunflower meadows. Guests also have free weekend admission to the site owners’ PYO flower patch near Ledbury – a chance to take home a floral souvenir to soothe those post-holiday blues. Pitches here are based on traditional simplicity, with access to portable toilets, a water tap and washing-up area on the facilities front. You’re welcome to bring a gas barbecue or cook over a campfire (off the ground or in firepits, which can be hired on site), and there are several restaurants and pubs close by if you’d rather eat out.

Local attractions

This is a fabulous spot for mixing up some rural rambles with urban wanderings – Hereford (25 minutes' drive), where the cathedral houses the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library, is a good place to start. Keeping it country doesn’t mean missing out on history though – plan visits to 18th-century Berrington Hall (25 minutes), the medieval manor house at the National Trust’s Brockhampton estate (20 minutes) or the stunning turrets of Eastnor Castle (15 minutes). The well-preserved medieval fortress Goodrich Castle (40 minutes) is also worth a trip. If that’s enough history for now, perhaps take the kids to Newbridge Farm Park (10 minutes) for tractor rides, soft play and go karts, or – if you’re travelling without children – learn about one of the area’s most-loved products at Westons Cider Mill (20 minutes).
