  • Gloucestershire glamping with stunning views and easy road access
  • A 15-minute drive to Bath city centre; 25 minutes to Westonbirt
  • Comfy beds, ensuite bathrooms, kitchens and firepits
At the southern end of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with views towards the Black Mountains (to the west), the Mendip Hills (to the south) and the Malvern Hills (to the north), you’d have to agree that Toghill House Farm has quite the scenic location… Fittingly for such a pretty location, the glamping units you’ll be staying are equally attractive propositions. Each one makes a cosy and comfy place for a break, whether you're on a couple's retreat or travelling ad a family. Units have all been kitted out with comfy beds (with bedding provided), kitchen facilities and an ensuite bathroom (with a flushing loo, shower and heated towel rail). Outdoors, each one has a private dining area with table, seating and a firepit; if it’s not sitting-out weather, retreat indoors where there's a selection of games and some books and magazines (along with essentials like electric sockets, USB ports and lighting). Tea and coffee are provided too, along with a hamper full of locally produced breakfast goodies. There are some splendid views around the place, too – but if you’d like to head out you’ve got a choice. Keep it rural with countryside walks and visits to the likes of Dyrham Park and Westonbirt Arboretum or opt for a rather different experience with city strolls in Bath or Bristol; all are within a 25-minute drive.

Local attractions

What’s there to do in Bath city centre (25 minutes’ drive)? Quite a lot, it turns out. There are historical sites, such as the Roman baths, Pulteney Bridge and Bath Abbey, cool architecture such as The Royal Crescent or the Jane Austen Centre for literary buffs. And in Bristol (20 minutes), the Banksy graffiti, the dockyard and art galleries make for quite the cultural visit. Those of you who’d like to pack as much wildlife and natural beauty into your holiday as possible may want to beeline for Longleat (40 minutes), where the safari park has heaps of wild animals, or perhaps Cheddar Gorge (45 minutes), home to stunning caves, a gorge and other attractions. Then, there's Wookey Hole (45 minutes) too, where caves and tunnels meet museums, a vintage penny arcade and miniature golf. Get a taste of the fine life at Lacock Abbey (20 minutes), an excellent stop for those who are interested in the life of inventor William Henry Fox Talbot. The site is close to Westonbirt Arboretum (25 minutes) too, so prepare to explore the Gruffalo trail, treetop walkway and woodland trail. If you’re here for the Badminton Horse Trials (15 minutes), you’ll also have a good base at Toghill House Farm.

Bell tent

Liked: Beautiful, peaceful setting. Every attention to detail, we didn’t want for anything. Attentive and helpful host. Facilities were excellent - clean, modern, comfortable and fully functioning. Dogs allowed and whole pitch area securely fenced in so kids and pets free to roam.

Disliked: This wasn’t a problem for us but you will need a car as there are no shops or cafes/pubs within walking distance.

Gertie shepherd's hut

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay here. Upon arrival we were greeted with the friendly owners and showed us to our cabin. We had fresh local produce and freshly baked bread for us once we got into the cabin. Given information about local things to do and local pubs/restaurants. The cabin had such beautiful views looking over the hills of Bath and towards Bristol watching the sunset in the woodfired hot tub. You get to going around the farm amd see the sheep amd horses that are on the land. We enjoyed the area and place soo much we are going to book again for another weekend stay.

Disliked: None whatsoever

Gertie shepherd's hut

Liked: We spent four fantastic nights in the shepherds hut and loved every minute. The hut is found at the far end of a working farm and feels very private and secluded. We had wonderful views across the hills towards Bristol. Very cosy, warm, with all essential cooking equipment provided. The bathroom is excellent and we were both surprised by the instant heat and pressure of the shower. We took our little pup along for the trip and she absolutely loved this slice of heaven. The local area is great for exploration - several National Trust sites are a short drive away. There are also lovely local-feel pubs around. We are already checking our calendars for a repeat visit!
