Willow Hill: The 32' heated pool operates a saltwater cleaning system

General

  • Relaxed site with far-reaching views over the Cotswolds
  • A 10-minute drive to Tewkesbury and 20 minutes to Cheltenham
  • Heated outdoor pool with raised sun deck and a hot tub

A peaceful, family-friendly Gloucestershire retreat surrounded by fields and ancient apple orchards, Willow Hill is on a farm just outside the village of Apperley and 20 minutes’ drive from Gloucester.

This chilled-out site is located within about half an hour’s drive of not one, not two, but three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty: the Cotswolds, which it overlooks, the Malvern Hills and the Wye Valley. Needless to say, there’s some splendid scenery around these parts, and some equally splendid places for a walk or bike ride. It’s about a mile through the apple orchards to the Severn Way, or two miles to ancient Odda’s Chapel. Other places to explore nearby include Tewkesbury (10 minutes’ drive), Upton on Severn and the lovely spa town of Cheltenham (both 20 minutes).

If you decide to stick around the site, you can spend your time gazing out over the gorgeous hilly scenery (particularly fine at sunrise or sunset) or swimming a few laps in the heated saltwater pool, with its raised sun deck and six-person hot tub. There’s also table service poolside, so you don’t have to go far or make much of an effort for a drink or a snack. Those travelling with kids are likely to be pleased to find plenty of space on site to kick a football around, and the owners can also set up badminton nets and ping-pong tables.

Amenities at Willow Hill include toilets, hot showers, a laundry area, a camp kitchen, and electrical points for charging your devices. Two pubs within a five-minute drive of the site serve traditional British food.

The relaxed, chilled out, rustic, family atmosphere. The views, the peace and quiet, the dog friendliness, the access to site fire-pit/bbq hamper, the pool, small site with not too many guests, the good weather helped too! Helpful service given for all questions/requirements.

    Disliked:

The toilets were fine, but more 'in order' would be helpful - not helped by guests who probably flush the 'wrong stuff' down the loo (hand paper etc). However, that said every time I went, I had a loo and didn't have to wait.
A very long wait for food to arrive (although all cooked from scratch). A very limited menu for any dietary requirements.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, it is much appreciated. During your stay, we had an unexpected problem with blocked toilets on two flush loos - as you say, unfortunately it was due to guests putting baby wipes and blue paper towels down the toilet and so blocking the macerator which breaks up the waste. Our facilities colleague was on leave that day but turned up at 6.30am on Tuesday to do the deed and unblock the toilets. We have improved our signage reminding guests that they must only use toilet paper in the toilet and, fingers crossed, this won't happen very often again, if ever!!

I am sorry you were waiting a while for food, we're really pleased to welcome our new chef Cameron to the teama and we are, this week, revising our menu to widen its appeal. We also have a sous chef joining to support the kitchen through service and aiming to provide a swift and response food and drinks service from hereon. We don't always get it right, but we welcome feedback and really seek to improve. Thanks again for your comments, kind regards, Ruth Darling, general manager

Shower in Top Field would not heat

From the manager...

Hi Lee, thank you for your review, it's much appreciated. I'm only sorry the shower wouldn't heat up correctly, aoologies for that, not everyone wants the Wim Hof approach and a cold morning shower :) We've had it checked over and are adding the item to our morning and evening checklists for the team to run the showers and check temperatures. Delighted you came to stay with us, and enjoyed the rest of our facilities, the pool has been a winner this year! Kind regards, Ruth Darling, general manager

    Disliked:

No local shop as labelled on site, Customer service was OK however very long waits for service, food and drink.
New Farm animals, new baby goats appeared distressed in small cage, and no one really attended to them.
Not much access to swimming pool, dirty water in pool.

From the manager...

Thanks so much for your review, we welcome all feedback and do take steps based on guests' comments. I'm sorry to hear you had a long wait for service, we have had a transition period with staff changes which has been challenging, but we're putting that right and are delighted to have new chef Cameron who has just joined the team. Our two baby goats have been with us for less than a week, and the little black goat is exceptionally vocal - the breeder said he was the noisiest of the bunch - so apologies for his bleating, we think he will settle down. They have the knack of sounding like a crying baby in distress but I can assure you they are well fed, looked after and loved. We are letting them settle in their pen before we practise walking them with a halter/collar to socialise them. I'm surprised you refer to the pen as small as it's plenty ample for space and allows them to practice natural behaviours and move about freely, we did check with the experienced breeder beforehand, and have great advice from another goat owner to make sure we're doing the right thing! Access to the pool is freely available from the start of the day to darkness - if the cover happens to be on (to conserve temperature and electricity), it's a simple question of asking one of the team to take it off. Once again, thanks for your comments, much appreciated and we do really hope to see you again, kind regards, Ruth Darling, general manager

Would have been good to specify about electric hook ups only being near the main site but only a very minor comment, the place was fab.

From the manager...

Hello there, thank you very much for your feedback, it's much appreciated. Great to hear the children had a lovely time, and our friendly team worked their magic.

You make a good point about the electric hook ups, and I will see if we can include this information on the booking platforms and on our website. As the camping field is an open field rather than offering prescribed pitches, it does mean electric hook ups are limited by the length of cables we can run out. Guests are able to charge their mobile devices easily and use the communal fridge and freezer in the camp washing up area so we do try and steer guests to non-electric if we can. Thank you though for adding this comment in, it's an important one to make and I will see how we can manage expectations better, best wishes, Ruth Darling and team.

Beautiful location. Pub 5mins walk (as the crow flies) but a couple of miles in the car. Excellent amenities. Restaurant area was lovely but due to technical issues we didn't get a chance to sample the food. Pool area was lovely but we didn't venture in as it looked a little green (natural salt water apparently but we weren't brave enough to try it out) Lots to do though and would definitely recommend. Will visit again this time with the kids

    Disliked:

Very expensive relative to other sites. The management team, although lovely, appeared a little disorganised. We didn't like how the pitches were not marked out, so we drove around for quite a while trying to find a suitable spot to pitch up. It didn't help how other campers took up ridiculous amounts of space with additional tables and gazebos etc with no challenge from management.
