  • Spacious meadow pitches on a South Gloucestershire heavy horse farm
  • A 20-minute drive to Berkeley Castle and 30 minutes to WWT Slimbridge
  • Back-to-basics, rural base for exploring the Cotswolds and Bristol
Fancy combining a spot of wild camping in farm fields with the chance to befriend Shire horses? Set in peaceful South Gloucestershire countryside, the grass pitches at Camping at Oakfield Farm may be just what you’re after. This family-friendly spot is well away from the road on a working heavy horse farm. Guests here have the opportunity to step back in time and see the owners working the land traditionally with their horses. There are lots of other animals to spot on the farm, including Smudge the Shetland pony and lots of friendly ducks. Animal meet-and-greets, feeding sessions and heavy horse experiences are available on request too. The farm’s peaceful vibe belies the fact that it is only half an hour’s drive from Bristol, mellow-stone Cotswold villages or Westonbirt, The National Arboretum. However, if you’re here to potter around the local countryside, there are many local walks to explore, including a few through the neighbouring alpaca farm. No need to climb back into the car if you fancy eating out either, as a five-minute walk across the farm fields takes you to the local pub and beer garden in Rangeworthy village for tasty home-cooked food – there’s also an Indian restaurant and takeaway.

Liked: Super simple set in beautiful scenery.

Disliked: Make sure to bring a big container or bucket to collect water - the water sprays all over the place!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Gorgeous views and private campsite. Felt very safe and secure for 4year old to run around.
Owners arranged for a tour of the farm which was fantastic for my daughter and made it very special. We rescheduled to a week later due to weather and owners were very accommodating for this.

Disliked: Only one portaloo without a light. It’d be good to have two with a torch inside. No tap on the water butt so water just sprayed out.

From the manager: Hi , Thank you for your lovely review .we always do our very best to ensure camper satisfaction. We will look at putting a tap on the water tank to avoid the water spraying out too much .we don't supply torches as many campers bring their own !!!.Anyway we are so glad your daughter enjoyed her mini animal experience.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Basic but flat pitch with beautiful views. Plenty of space and wildlife to see. We spotted hares and a deer as well as the farm horses. Clear starry skies.

Disliked: No water available on arrival. I'm confident owners would have sorted had we not been out all day but would have been nice to be checked before we arrived.
Loud generator noise nearby at night spoilt the otherwise peaceful pitch.

From the manager: We thank you for your feedback . Regarding the water and to clarify , this was located across the field from where you were camping next to the portaloo and was marked "clean drinking water" (big tank). We always check water before our campers arrive and its not taken away unless for refilling . We are sorry you were able to hear a generator on your visit. This was temporary .We are a working farm and noticed that you had set up camp quite close to some of our farm buildings .There is alot of field space available for wild camping here and plenty of plots further away from the buildings .As a result of your feedback we have since opened up another field ( which was waiting to be cut for crops - the weather has not been kind to us !).We are only a phone call away and are always here to answer or clear up any issues our campers may have .We would have been happy on this occasion to turn it off if we had been aware of it at the time . We do hope despite this that you enjoyed your stay which is our main aim. Thanks again for your comments

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Lovely and spacious - lots of space between tents. Feels rural although you are very close to road/amenities. Great walks. Friendly (but not overbearing) hosts. Horses!

Disliked: Facilities are fairly basic (for the nightly cost) and due to it being a portaloo, it can get a little bit smelly. There was a dog barking for some time in the night. Although planes were infrequent and not bothersome to me, it does appear to be under a flightpath.

From the manager: Hi Thanks for your lovely review. Once we assess the success of this pop up site , we will certainly think about the possibility of upgrading our facilities for next time .Although we are on a large plot here , there are neighbouring farms so there might be occasional noises we cant control . However we are glad you enjoyed your stay

Lovely family at the farm, and a great pub that you can walk to.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Space, countryside, freshair.

Disliked: The smell of the porta loo, but with a few strong air fresheners in the loo it would get rid of this.
