Whitemead Forest Park: Aerial shot of the hardstanding and the tent pitches

General

  • Well-equipped park just outside Parkend in the Forest of Dean
  • Puzzlewood and Clearwell Caves within a 10-minute drive
  • Indoor swimming pool, spa area, restaurant and kids' activities

As you’d expect from the name, Whitemead Forest Park is surrounded by woodland. And not just any old woodland... but the age-old Forest of Dean, one-time stamping ground of the royals and their pals.

It’s not hard to see why the regal types would flock to this part of Gloucestershire – the surrounds are most scenic, and packed with plenty of things to do including days of wandering among ancient trees (on foot, on bikes or on horseback), exploring spooky caves and riding rural railways.

So far, so peaceful… and that vibe is stretched out to the park’s facilities too, which include a free gym, sauna, steam room and spa pools.

And if you’re in charge of kids that have more active plans in mind? Such scenarios are sorted too: the indoor swimming pool has a kids’ area, and there are also several outdoor play areas scattered around the site. Through the summer holidays, the park’s all abuzz with various activities they can join in with (for an extra charge).

Despite all this activity, there’s little chance of going hungry here – the restaurant serves all day from breakfast to dinner (via afternoon tea…) with a couple of bars also on hand to provide the drinks and entertainment. If you’d like to venture out, there are a couple of pubs in the nearby village of Parkend (10 minutes’ walk) and lots of restaurants and shops in Lydney (10 minutes’ drive).

Great site with good hard standing with water nearby. Toilet, shower and dishwashing facilities were all clean and had everything you’d need. Site is right in the Forest of Dean with a private gate leading lovely walks and cycle rides nearby. The Sculpture Trail is about a mile away.
The pool is fab with two jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and children’s pool. Family changing rooms and solo changing rooms are lovely and clean. The shop has nice wine, great selection of chocolate and crisps plus quite a few essentials. There’s a big restaurant, waffle shack, outdoor seating, entertainment venue and loads of grassland to play in. There’s also a mini golf course.
We rode down to Lydney harbour which was really lovely. Coffee shop, a couple of nice walks and car parking - not much space to park a motorhome without blocking a few car parking spaces. Lydney town has everything you might want to buy locally including fish and chips. There’s a caravan specialist and a cycle shop nearby for emergencies.
The Dean Forest Steam Railway is in Parkend not far from the campsite.
The site also has apartments, glamping pods and chalets for rent. The staff are lovely. In fact everyone we met during our holiday was lovely.

Excellent lodge with clean facilities and friendly staffs.09/30/2022

  • 2 bedroom lodge (no pets, woodland)
  • Recommend to friends   Visit again
  • Liked:

We stayed in Woodland two bedrooms lodge for one week. We have many spaces, all the rooms and kitchen are clean and well maintained. We also like the park where we can pass the gate to walk in the woods! There are many attractions within half an hour's driving. The restaurant is very bright and has many spaces inside and outside, so we could relax to enjoy the meals. The indoor swimming pool's temperature is very comfortable, we also like the steam room and Sunna.

    Disliked:

The WIFI is a downside. We have to log in whenever we use the WIFI, and the signal is very weak. Phone calls are very poor, but it already states in advance.

Fantastic location for dog walking, cycling or hiking. The site has plenty to offer for all. We didn't use the pool so cannot comment on that, however we did use the restaurant for a takeaway which was lovely.

The shower facilities were excellent. Clean, tidy and a lovely powerful shower.

    Disliked:

The pitch was dirty upon arrival. Rubbish in the hedges and the grass hadn't been cut. However, we did arrive on the day of the Queens funeral so I am going to assume staff were rightfully so otherwise engaged.

Local attractions

For those seeking a bit of peace and quiet, there are stacks of splendid trails around the Forest of Dean to ramble or ride bikes along (and a bike hire place a few minutes’ walk away in Parkend if you need it). Should the kids demand more from their woodland outings, take them along to seek out dragons and unicorns along the themed trails at Puzzlewood, or launch themselves into the air on the ziplines and high ropes courses at Go Ape; both are 10 minutes away by car.

Much of the area’s attraction is linked to its natural good looks, but there’s also manmade interest in the form of the miners’ caverns at Clearwell Caves and the puffing steam trains of the Dean Forest Railway (both 10 minutes' drive).

In the unlikely event that you tire of this scenery, head west to the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for days visiting Goodrich Castle (20 minutes) and the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (25 minutes), or canoeing from Symonds Yat (25 minutes).

Must see

  • WWT Slimbridge Wetlands Centre (11.4 kilometres)
  • Berkeley Castle (11.5 kilometres)
  • Caldicot Castle & Country Park (11.5 kilometres)

National Trust

  • The Kymin (9.8 kilometres)
  • Westbury Court Garden (12.1 kilometres)
