Hardstanding pitch

  • Dog-friendly site with access to Forest of Dean walks and cycle paths
  • A 20-minute drive from the Wye Valley National Landscape
  • Firepits for hire; small shop selling the basics, logs and kindling
Family-friendly pitches in Gloucestershire’s untamed Forest of Dean – it doesn’t get much better than that. Except it does… because at Forest of Dean Camping, guests can join miles of purpose-built cycling and hiking tracks straight from the pitches. Whether you’re after a quick walk with the dog – your four-legged companions are very welcome here – a pub crawl in local villages or a whole-day biking adventure, they’re all close by. After a day in the forest, head back to your pitch for an evening around the embers. No need to lug everything from home, as there are firepits for hire on a per-night basis, and logs and kindling are sold on the premises. The site also has a small shop selling the basics and alcohol (open 9am until 6pm at reception), so you’ll never get caught short without supplies – and if you want to pick up some eggs for breakfast, spuds or meat for the barbecue, there’s a local shop just 15 minutes’ stroll away. On a practical level, spotless amenities on site include a heated shower block with separate disabled facilities and a laundry room for taking care of chores. For those travelling by pedal power, there’s a secure bike room, and there’s a noticeboard at reception with local tourist information if you’re needing a bit of sightseeing inspiration.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We had the best 3 night stay, the facilities were immaculate, really handy shop at reception, and Jess was lovely (as was Max the dog to greet us).

We had a huge pitch which was amazing, but all the pitches were large and well spaced so it didn’t feel cramped in at all.

The location is great with access to so many walks and days out nearby, we went to Puzzlewood which was lovely.

The Bailey Inn pub is a short walk away for an afternoon drink, however The Miners Arms a short drive away (also walkable) was amazing, we had a really lovely meal there.

Will definitely be back to this campsite next year as it was perfect for us!

Disliked Having to go home!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent Forest of Dean Campsite

We had a really enjoyable stay and would definitely recommend this campsite to anyone visiting the Forest of Dean.

The pitches are large and spacious, with plenty of room to get properly set up without feeling crammed in next to your neighbours. The whole site is very well maintained and clearly looked after, and the facilities were excellent — clean, tidy and a good size, even when the site was busy.

A massive plus for us was the dog-walking area. There’s plenty of space to get the dogs out for a proper walk, which makes such a difference when camping with four-legged family members. 🐾

The location is also ideal for exploring the Forest of Dean and enjoying everything the area has to offer.

Overall, a well-run, spacious and dog-friendly campsite with excellent facilities. We had a great stay and would happily return.

Highly recommended — especially if you’re camping with dogs! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Disliked Not a big one but no access to food but lots of numbers for delivery companies.

Local attractions

Sporty souls can get out into the scenic Wye Valley National Landscape (20 minutes’ drive) for days of canoeing, paddleboarding or cycling along the River Wye. There’s also challenging climbing at Symonds Yat (half an hour), and gorge climbing or abseiling are on hand for adrenaline junkies. More sedate local pursuits include a steam-train ride aboard the Dean Forest Railway (10 minutes), which also offers lots of family-friendly attractions like murder mystery evenings. For outdoor fun in enchanting, moss-covered forest, the walking routes at Puzzlewood (also 10 minutes) are suitable for kids, and you can all learn about local history in the reconstructed cottages and museum at the Dean Heritage Centre (15 minutes). The spectacular remains of Cistercian Tintern Abbey (half an hour) have a gorgeous setting by the River Wye. Goodrich Castle (25 minutes) is another stunning spot where you can clamber up Norman-era towers, brave the dungeons and see relics of exquisite stained-glass windows in its half-ruined chapel.
