General

  • Pop-up wild camping near Castleton in the Peak District National Park
  • A 15-minute walk into Castleton; 35 minutes’ drive to Chatsworth House
  • Grass pitches with pubs and cafés nearby, plus direct access to walks

Looking for a peaceful rural stay amid spectacular Peak District countryside views? You could have hit the jackpot at Treaks Pringle Camping, a rural pop-up site with a true wild-camping vibe on the very outskirts of Castleton, one of the prettiest and most popular villages in the national park.

But back to the site, surrounded by fields and gorgeous views wherever you look. From your pitch, you will have panoramas to Winnats Pass, and there are myriad attractions like the Blue John Cavern and Peveril Castle (both five minutes’ drive) close by. Any long-distance walkers looking for an overnight stop? Treaks Pringle Campsite is close to Edale (10 minutes) and the start of the Pennine Way.

Basic facilities on site stretch to portaloos, so you’ll need to bring everything with you including torches for moving around after dark, Bring the barbecue if you fancy cooking alfresco, but if not, there are pubs and cafés aplenty in Castleton, which is a 15-minute walk so you don’t need to bother with the car.

Well-behaved dogs are very welcome here, but please keep them on leads at all times.

Please note that the pitches here are on a slight slope.

    Superb location!
Walking distance to the village centre and to Mam Tor.

    Disliked:

It's ok for 1-2 days stay but not more as the field is mainly sloppy with no facilities apart from toilet blocs.
There are no showers or drinking water.
If you have a caravan, you are better off parking on the road as many did.

Clean toilets, friendly staff, eggs and refreshments for sale was a lovely touch! allowed a bbq / fire pit which is great. And really easy booking and arrival process.

    Disliked:

On a bit of a hill but not too bad. A shower would be nice and the fire pits to hire are a little expensive if you’re just on a short trip.

Toilets were clean till early morning. Needs proper cleaning when everyone poops in the morning

From the manager...

The toilets get emptied about mid day and cleaned when everybody has been. The weekend you was there we had heavy dew which was also on the toilets make them look dirty.

    Absolutely perfect location in Castletown
    Lovely views and surroundings.
5 min walk to the caves and 5 min drive to mam tor car park. 10 min walk to cafe and shops.
Were told to pitch anywhere we like
Nice soft grassy ground with no hard rocks or muddy bald patches.
Bottled water/pop eggs were available to buy, along with hire of fire pit and charcoal.
Children liked the chickens and ducks
    Enough portaloos - no queues
We forgot our torch and Jess very kindly lent us hers.

    Disliked:

Site is based on a hill. But what do you expect when you are in the land of hills!
We stayed for one night. The portaloos were clean and fresh upon arrival however as the day went on, the smell and state of them got worse and worse. I could not use them the following morning as the smell made me wretch and there was wee over every single seat and lid. We ended up walking 10 mins to use the ones in the cafe.
If it wasn’t for the toilet situation I would stay for longer than a night.

Loved the views, I love Castleton anyway but to be a stone throw from odins mine was amazing, especially seen as that was the way the tent positioned. Love the fact we could bring are own bbq/fireplace, love the honesty box for drinks/fire wood. Just bear in mind u need to be self sufficient ie water, would give 5 stars if had drinking water onsite. I like wild camping alot but having a near 6 month old baby this was a luxury and my little 1 loved it. More noise from campers on the road behind than the site, looked fully booked on Saturday 13th August, then we book for another night on Sunday and it was blissful for my 34th birthday, moon and sky looked amazing
