Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Away from everything, honesty boxes for forgotten food and drink were great and not badly made priced, clean toilets, and friendly owner. The site looks directly at mam tor.

Disliked: It was meant to be quiet after 2300 but the drunken idiots didn’t quiet till after 0300, two groups ruined it for us, they had their dogs off the lead to mess everywhere and they didn’t pick it up, not the sites fault but that’s what we disliked.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The camp location, the owner was friendly and the views were amazing!

Disliked: My car got stuck in the wet grass and the wheels were spinning. It broke down 1 mile after leaving the campsite ended up with an engine problem and had to be towed by RAC to the garage. Apart from this, my experience was amazing. Be careful on wet days and try to stay as close to the entrance as possible. Recommendation for the site owner: Adding some cement or stone paths inside the campsite would be a great help and could prevent car problems

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Washing up area and 3 portaloos available. Large open area where any space was available to take and wasn’t too busy. Friendly and good communication with option to rent a firepit. Not far from the village and nearby trails. Great views and good value.

Disliked: Just the one male cubicle available.

Local attractions

With lots of historic sites to see, landscapes to hike and caverns to descend into, the first bit is deciding where to start. For days hiking, the Pennine Way starts in Edale (15 minutes’ drive) and heads out onto moors, past reservoirs and gritstone edges. A hike with a view is certain at Ladybower Reservoir (15 minutes) too. Five miles through Cave Dale (30 minutes' walk), a limestone valley, is just as splendid. Places you might want to visit on the way include Castleton village and Peveril Castle - and there are views towards Mam Tor and The Great Ridge too. Caverns on your ‘to-explore’ list? Take an underground boat trip in Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes), investigate the Blue John stone in Treak Cliff Cavern (five minutes' drive) or learn rope-making in Peak Cavern (25 minutes' walk). When it’s time to extend your learning to history in the Peak District, Peveril Castle (25 minutes) above Castleton village is one the closest ruins. For somewhere that has survived the test of time, and now makes a rather excellent picnicking location, is Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive). The estate also has a farmyard and playground.
