  • Immaculately kept site, family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers
Pigs, ponies and proximity to top Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills Farm Campsite. This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from kiddie heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly holiday by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from your pitch.) Kids should be enthusiastically entertained by the chance to pet and give treats to the Middlehills pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings. Facilities at Middlehills Farm are spotlessly kept and include a toilet and shower block (showers are subject to an extra charge, so remember to bring some coins along), a small shop selling camping equipment and basic bits, a chemical waste point and a washing-up area.

Liked: What a wonderful campsite. The site is clean, the toilet blocks super clean, shared fridge freezer was really useful. Playground was wonderful for my 9 year old. The owners let us stay a further night even though they had a big event that was being prepared. We will definitely be back in 2024. A further note is that there is so much to do within a 20-30 minute drive in all directions.

Disliked: Going home!

Liked: Spacious fields with the freedom to choose your own pitches. Warm showers. Small shop on site run by friendly staff. Fridge and freezers available. Great play area for children. Good location - ten minute drive into Matlock (with plenty pubs, places to eat, Sainsbury’s!)

Disliked: The weather! Which obviously is not the campsites’ fault. Who goes camping in storm Lilian?? 🫢

Liked: This was our first camping holiday as a family with small children. Me and my partner were very happy with all the facilities on site. The children loved the park and also being able to interact with the animals on the farm, it felt very safe for the children and also safe leaving our tent while visiting local areas. The campsite and toilet/ shower blocks were all very clean and well looked after. The shop was well stocked and handy to have on site with very friendly and chatty staff ! We loved that the site was very central in regards to places to visit. Overall very good stay for our first camping trip.

Disliked: That we couldn’t stay longer !

Liked: Middlehill Farm Campsite is a true gem that exceeded all our expectations. From the moment we arrived, we were struck by the amazing atmosphere that instantly made us feel at home. The campsite is beautifully maintained, with spotless facilities and a peaceful, natural setting that offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Our kids absolutely loved the on-site park, which provided endless entertainment and quickly became their favorite spot. It's well-equipped and thoughtfully designed, ensuring that the little ones are never bored. We also appreciated the cleanliness and tidiness of the entire campsite, which made our stay even more enjoyable. Carolyn and Kevin looked after the whole campsite well and nothing was ever a problem. Thank you. The showers are a small detail, but one worth mentioning. At 20 pence for a shower, it's not a big deal at all, especially considering you can use pound coins to get a solid five minutes of hot water. This simple and straightforward system was just another example of how well-organized and guest-friendly Middlehill Farm is. Another highlight of our stay was discovering a farm just around the corner that brews its own beers. It’s an absolute must-try! The beer is fantastic, with a range of flavors that cater to all tastes, and it really added a special touch to our camping experience. It’s the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring or to pick up a few bottles to enjoy by the campfire. In all, Middlehill Farm Campsite is an amazing place to relax, unwind, and enjoy some quality family time. We left feeling refreshed and eager to return. I would definitely recommend Middlehill Farm Campsite to anyone looking for a clean, welcoming, and fun-filled camping experience, with the added bonus of a local brewery just a short walk away.

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks. The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round. Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too). To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each. The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also quickly recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.
