  • Well-kept site, family-run for over 30 years
  • Friendly and welcoming with outstanding views
  • Close to Gullivers Kingdom and 45 minutes' drive from Alton Towers
Pigs, ponies and proximity to Peak District towns… farm the family out to Middlehills Farm Campsite. This is a mellow, peaceful and very friendly park that's been run by the Lomas family for over 30 years, set in 40 acres of countryside in the Peak District National Park and a quick drive from kiddie heaven Gullivers Kingdom at Matlock Bath. (Give them an even more heavenly holiday by an additional trip to Alton Towers, about 22 miles from your pitch.) Kids should be enthusiastically entertained by the chance to pet and give treats to the Middlehills pigs and ponies, and with the positively popular play park: owners' Nick and Liz's four-legged lot are often around to make pals with, and the play area is cunningly set near the pitches for grownups to keep a beady eye on proceedings. Facilities at Middlehills Farm include a toilet and shower block (showers are subject to an extra charge, so remember to bring some coins along), two chemical waste points and two washing-up areas with a fridge-freezer each. Schedule pizza night for Friday and Saturday evenings, as this is when the site opens up its pizza van. There is also a small shop selling local produce from the farm shop in Bakewell, fresh milk and bread from the dairy and cheese from Hartington, along with snacks, basic camping equipment and briquettes and starter packs.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Friendly staff, pleasant and well-kept grounds, no pitch restrictions (just go ahead and choose your own), clean toilets with wonderfully warm showers (£1 for 5 mins), "on site" shop for snacks.

Disliked Perhaps disliked is too strong a term, but the "on site" shop didn't stock alcohol; some might consider this a bonus. I mention this only as the closest shop is many miles away. There is a nearby pub, but you will have to negotiate a short section of busy road.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Loved the play park and amount of families - my son had an amazing time playing on the park and making friends.
The toilets and pot washing area was really well laid out and cleaned regularly. I didn’t use the showers but they looked good too.
Great little shop on site for any bits you need.
Guy on reception was super helpful and always around to answer queries.
We actually stayed an extra night we were having such a good time.
Great price for what we got.

Disliked Whilst this wouldn’t put me off going again, it was sometimes noisy with the kids playing on the park and some of the nearby quarry works. However, the enjoyment my son got from the park and the set up of the site generally far outweighed any negatives for me. And the site was well managed and quiet by 10ish.
WiFi didn’t work for my friend but I had enough signal not to worry.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Being able to choose pitch and be close to the park and facilities. The shop being open until 8pm, friendly staff. Very scenic and family friendly.

Disliked Felt like the kids were being policed a little bit on the play area. Appreciate that there has to be some rules however, kids are kids and just want to have fun and make use of what is on offer for them.

The noise from the nearby quarry is quite loud.

We weren't given WiFi info....didn't affect our overall stay but I think site info should be given on arrival.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The campsite has a good kids park right in the middle which is great. The shop is good and open most of the day. At weekends the pizza van is really nice. The pigs are part of the furniture there. The location is great for lots of walks, visiting Robin Hoods Stride, Matlock, Middleton Top etc we’ve stayed here many many times over the years.

Disliked There was an annoying very large group of blocks which kept us up late. Part of the risk of camping sometimes 🤷‍♂️

Local attractions

After you've taken the kids around Gullivers Kingdom and Alton Towers (that'll be the first three or four days of the holiday sorted), set aside some time for the grand halls and houses in the region, which should be seen firstly because they're fab, and secondly because these days out will be a sedate difference to white-knuckled days out at local theme parks. The knowledgeable team at Middlehills Farm insist that Chatsworth House is a must, and so should you say too, for spectacular gardens even the kids will go gaga for, a decent play area and a farm park for more petting. Bonus: the surrounding 1000-acre park is free to roam around all year round. Nearby Haddon Hall just outside Bakewell is also a sweet treat: film fans and goggleboxers might recognise its setting from the likes of Jane Eyre, Elizabeth and The Princess Bride (the gardens here are pretty splendid too). To tramp around old towns, Matlock, Buxton, Bakewell and Ashbourne are all within easy driving distance of Middlehills Farm – Peak District eats and other souvenirs should be picked up in each. The farm team has plenty more info on the local area in the site reception, but also quickly recommended are walks and watersports around/on nearby Carsington Water, and examining the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham from a cable car at High Tor.
