  • Well-maintained, peaceful site on working dairy farm with scenic views
  • In the Peak District National Park, a 15-minute drive from Buxton
  • Close to the Tissington and High Peak trails for countryside wanders
Plonk yourself down between pretty Peak District and Staffordshire moorlands at Pilsbury Lodge Farm, a simple yet scenic family-run site on a working dairy farm with countryside views. This is a friendly sort of spot where the owners happily greet you and get you settled in on arrival, so you can spend more time tearing through the lovely local landscape. There is, after all, much to see in this part of the world. Just off the A515, the park is 15 minutes’ drive from Buxton and 25 minutes from the Georgian and Tudor architecture in Ashbourne, both of which are known for restaurants serving up fine food made from locally sourced ingredients. When you’d rather cook for yourself, finagle a few of the farm-fresh eggs for sale from the site’s hens and ducks or get grilling. Cooking over coals is allowed at the park (in a firepit or on a raised barbecue so as to avoid spoiling the grass) and Hartington (10 minutes away) has a cheese shop specialising in the sought-after local stilton for jazzing up your burgers, plus tearooms and pubs are here too. If you can still manage to waddle about after all that food, take the dog off on strolls on the Tissington and High Peak trails close by, rinsing off after long walkies in the basic showers back at the site. Other facilities include a bathroom block with toilets, a chemical disposal point, washing-up facilities, drinking water and ice pack freezing facilities to help keep your food fresh.

Liked: Location and the views Showers were warm and spacious Farm chickens roaming Spacious plots

Disliked: Unisex toilets - ran out of toilet paper Not the nicest of toilets even for back to basic camping. Two toilets available so would much prefer male and female

Liked: I visited with my 9 year old son. The farm and site were well off the beaten path and the owner very friendly. There was plenty of space to choose from when pitching. We chose the field nearest the main toilet block. The dry stone walls offered some wind protection, we were close to the drinking water, toilets, showers and pot wash facilities. The two unisex toilets were of good size, tudy and reasonably clean. The washing up sink had hot running water and a lovely view from the door of hens wandering past. The showers were very basic, £1 coin into the meter and 12 mins of hot water, but did the job of warming us up and £1 was enough for my son and I to share a shower and both get clean and warm after a long day walking. The scenery was beautiful from the site, and we enjoyed the sounds of the cows in the surrounding fields mooing. My son and I felt safe and he had plenty of space to run around as well as a hill to run up and fly his kite. The farm is very much a working farm with no frills, which we appreciated and enjoyed. If you're after a luxury camp this is not it.

Disliked: There were only a couple of niggles and they did not put a downer on our stay. Just suggestions for improvement.... The bin station was comprehensive but was not emptied/monitored while we were there. As such bin bags were piling up around the black bin to the point the hens were pecking through them. The other area that could have been improved was tile on the shower floor or replacing the very water logged lino, and a curtain between the shower and the change area to prevent water reaching the entire floor. All belongings had to be hung to stay dry which was a little awkward particularly with small people (children). A seat in the showers would be another suggestion. Final niggle was the lack of hot water in toilets, only child running water. Having said this, these did not upset our stay, we had a lovely time.

Local attractions

The fishing’s fantastic hereabouts – ask the owners where to roam with your rod – as are all the subterranean spots for exploring. Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park is well worth a wander, while the Pavilion Gardens are tip-top for botanical buffs (both 15 minutes' drive). Holidaying with pint-sized travellers? Matlock Bath (25 minutes) is a brill option for family-filled days out at the amusement centres or on the kids’ rides at Gulliver's Kingdom, and if anyone in the clan has a sweet tooth, making a beeline for Bakewell (15 minutes) to try the famed tart (or is it a pudding…? either way, it’s delicious) is a must. From here, it’s another 15 minutes to Chatsworth House, one of the most well-known country homes in England because of its jaw-droppingly huge 1600s facade and massive collections of fancy paintings, Old Master drawings and neoclassical sculptures.
