  • Peaceful dog-friendly hillside farm site with level, mowed terraces
  • A 10-minute drive from Ashbourne; 15 minutes to Carsington Water
  • Fire baskets for hire and wood to buy; footpaths through the farm
Thorpe Cloud View Camping is all about the peaceful times under ever-changing skies. You’ll notice the sunsets, starry skies and landscapes are particularly pretty at this five-acre hillside site right outside the Peak District National Park, above the Thorpe Cloud Landmark at Dovedale with footpaths running through the farm. With pitches on level, mowed terraces across a hillside terrain, you’ll be well-positioned to descend on the national park, whether that’s the Stepping Stones (15 minutes’ drive), Ashbourne (10 minutes) or Matlock Bath (20 minutes). It’s peaceful up here, as things feel quite tucked away. However, the hideaway isn’t without its small bits of self-entertainment, as acoustic music is allowed (from gifted musicians only) before quiet time between 10.30pm and 7am and firepits are too – there are fire baskets for hire and wood available to buy from Ed the farmer or you can use your own off-ground braziers. As the site follows a peaceful, back to nature ethos, this isn’t a site for loud music or single-sex groups, but dogs (on a lead) are allowed as long as they can behave around livestock (there are sheep, geese and chickens on site). Entry to the site is down a 500-metre single track. The farmhouse, 200 metres away from the pitches, has an amenities block with showers and toilets (all free) and there's also a standpipe in the meadow, an Elsan point and rubbish bins. Please note that campervan and vehicle access to the camping meadow is restricted in the low season and dependent on weather conditions. Campervans and other vehicles will have access to a hardstanding/car park area at all times.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: A lovely site, Ed and Jane were both very friendly and welcoming. Pitches were well maintained, with a few different levels to choose from depending on your preferences. On-site facilities also well kept, we were on the far end of the field and it was still only a minute walk to the loos etc. Drinking water, toilet block, showers all provided free of charge, the water pressure/temperature was great! We hired a fire pit for £10, which came with all the supplies we needed, which we felt was a very good deal compared to most sites that offer them. Plenty of wildlife around, we arrived to a buzzard and kestrels hunting, some lovely song birds, a curious family of sheep, and we even spotted an owl in the evening!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We love this site. Great view of Thorpe Cloud. The facilities are basic, but that's how we like it. Limited to 25 pitches, making it relaxed and quiet. Ed, the farmer is friendly and helpful. Will go again

Disliked: Was wet most of the week and some parts of the site around the toilets can be slippery

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great view, perfect sunset spot. Clean unisex showers and toilets. Local pub within walking distance. Fire pits available on every pitch. Wood available to purchase.

Disliked: Had to use Google maps to find site, do not use Waze! Not very well signposted.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The location, the view. Pub within about a mile through quiet country lanes and through field public walk.

Disliked: There was a large and rowdy group in multiple tents at the top of the field but we were not too concerned as the site had a 10.30pm quiet policy. Shame they carried on making noise until the early hours! Managed a frustrating terrible sleep, not the best start to the weekend. We thought the owners were great at first when we mentioned it the next morning. They said so sorry, we will refund the nights stay and our policy is no groups, so we will kick them off (which we thought was a strong response). Later they back tracked and said the group had apologised and promised to be quiet the following night (which they ended up being). However when we were sitting in the evening after a lovely days hike, one of the group came over asking our neighbours if their name was 'Mike' (my name) and when they said no, she said oh somebody called Mike complained about us last night blah blah blah. Couldn't really believe my ears that the owner had let slip/told them, not only that someone complained but also had identified who! So unprofessional, could not believe it. The fact they haven't bothered to refund us as per their offer, even though we asked about it after a few days after, has made me warn others here else would have been a great review. Shame as the farmer seemed nice. Their dog policy is also clear on pitchup, but the group, even on the 2nd night had a big bull breed dog running about off lead. If you have a small breed, on the lead as per the policy, it can make you on edge. Just a bit weird for me as the farmer was rolling around in his truck fairly regular. Small shower and toilet block, ok if you go in less busy times.

From the manager: We are so sorry Mike that you have had to resort to this poor review and have had to be so public. The camper I spoke to regarding the group noise on the previous night was extremely apologetic and insisted on being able to stay and wanted to apologise to the unhappy camper. I am not aware of how your name would have been passed on but she did insist on second guessing who it was and really wanted to apologise. We were only aware that this was group once they arrived as they all booked individually. We were not aware of the dog situation either. We will be extra vigilant. We have posted signs up around the site warning campers that the quiet rule must be adhered to. Any noisy campers will be asked to leave with immediate affect and will be allowed to collect their gear in the morning. We are also having a steward in a caravan onsite on busy weekends when we have a max of 20 tents on the 7 acre hillside campsite (with suitable levels for pitching) Hopefully this will prevent this happening again. As general rule out campers are mature couples with dogs and we try to maintain a high standard regarding behaviour and consideration for other campers. WE ARE SO DISAPOINTED THAT YOU HAD THIS EXPERIENCE. I will contact you direct regarding the refund that was discussed. Most of our campers have a wow experience due to the location, view, small number of tents, well supported by Ed the farmer who is checking for risk and behaviour issues. We allow cars on site, next to tents and also allow fire pits which all need extra vigilance.

Liked: Ed & Jane are lovely campsite owners! I got a parcel delivered to the site and when it went missing, Ed was very helpful in reaching out to neighbours and getting it back for me! The campsite is gorgeous with stunning views and loads to do around!

Disliked: It was only the weather that made setting up & taking down harder, everything else was great 😊

Local attractions

Historic towns? Terrific trails? Prehistoric sites? Absolutely. For the former, work a visit to the market town of Ashbourne (10 minutes’ drive) or the spa village of Matlock Bath (20 minutes) into your itinerary. For the latter, Hob Hurst's House (40 minutes) is a prehistoric burial mound – and just another addition to a long list of historical spots across the Peak District, including the Nine Ladies Stone Circle (half an hour), Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (25 minutes), Tissington Hall (15 minutes), Kedleston Hall (25 minutes) and the Crich Tramway Village (half an hour). When it comes to trails, there’s a very splendid selection about. Perhaps a 13-mile cycle on the Tissington Trail (10 minutes) beginning in Ashbourne? The limestone gorge and country park at the Heights of Abraham (20 minutes)? The Dovedale (25 minutes) river walk to the Stepping Stones and the Thorpe Cloud? For those who like a paddle or a cycle, Carsington Water (15 minutes) is an attractive candidate. Family-friendly days are bound to be packed with activities there, and the same goes for the family-friendly theme park Gulliver's Kingdom (20 minutes).
