  • Quiet rural site five minutes' drive from Ashbourne
  • A 10-minute drive from the Peak District; 20 minutes from Alton Towers
  • Two pubs within walking distance
Essential ingredients for a rural Derbyshire break? Peaceful spot surrounded by open fields and plenty of space for games/campfires/chilling out… If that combination sounds just about right, book yourselves into Brook Farm, a well-kept quiet site with no facilities out in the countryside five minutes’ drive from Ashbourne. The views here are mainly made up of various shades of green, in the form of fields and trees, with a few location bonus points thrown in for being on the banks of the Dove river. There’s plenty of space to play with around this site, but the folk here understand the value of peace and quiet, so they keep a lid on guest numbers rather than cram people in – and thumbs up to that move, as it leaves a great swathe of space for kids/dogs/demob-happy office workers to run around and for barbecues or campfires to be constructed safely away from the action. Beers, buns and burgers for the barbecue can be picked up from the butcher, baker and supermarket in Ashbourne. Want to stretch your legs further? There are plenty of walks to be had in the surrounds, and there are two pubs within walking distance of the site, the closest being just 25 minutes' walk away. The Peak District National Park’s about a 10-minute drive away for more outdoorsy options, and Alton Towers is 20 minutes away if you want to swap rural rambles for rollercoaster thrills. The site is also a short walk away from bus stops with an hourly bus service to locations including Derby, Ashbourne and Uttoxeter.

Cowfield electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Loved our one night stay! - beautiful peaceful location, no road noise - beautifully kept field with a nice flat pitch for our camper van. Fact that you can have a campfire made it for us was such a lovely evening to sit out. Dogs also loved it! Basic facilities but you know that before you go. Only a Portaloo on site but it was kept nice and clean. Site was quiet so not a problem for our stay. Just make sure you have a very long hook up lead (says at least 14 metres) we had to go and buy an extension as ours wasn’t long enough but our fault as did not read the info properly and needed one anyway. Luckily Halfords is only five minutes away. Thinking of booking again for a night end of this week can’t wait to return! Thank you so much this site is a little gem!!

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite, dog friendly, quiet and well stocked amenities, although no shower and pop up toilet it's very well maintained. The owners are friendly and it's in a lovely area of the Peak Districts, really close to the start of the Tissington Trail.

Cowfield electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Peaceful site. The site owner Ann was extremely helpful and very friendly. It is a basic site but anybody booking it and doesn’t know this needs to actually read what they’re booking. Can’t fault our stay at all, would highly recommend if you don’t require a proper toilet and shower. Ann informed us there was a “Swift” bus that stops just outside the campsite and we used this to go in to Ashbourne for the day. Very good tip! Lovely site again, would recommend

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Nice location, flat pitches.

Disliked: For the price for a single camper the facilities were woeful, single portaloo and one stand tap.

From the manager: Hello It was a very late booking and you arrived around 9.30pm on the Friday night and going dark and left early the next morning on your travels. We only advertise a portaloo and no facilities so this obviously is not the site for you in the first place before you made the booking . Sorry we cannot please everybody but please read the options in future and removing the need to leave a negative review which does not help others making their decision. I expect your preferred choice was full when decided you needed somewhere late on Friday.

Cowfield electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice quiet site, close to Ashbourne bus route. Toilet facilities were kept clean throughout the weekend.

Disliked: Shame about the small of Cannabis coming from the pitch of the person that was looking after the site. Particularly off putting.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I have returned from my weekend away, and upon investigation, the person looking out for me, had moved pitches, after my correspondence had gone out to let people know I would not see them. We are a small family farm and not associated with this type of behaviour.

A lovely quiet calm site was just what we wanted.

Local attractions

The Peak District National Park is quite simply a fab place to spend a few days roaming around on foot, on bikes, on horseback… If you can’t pick a place to start your explores, perhaps aim for the stepping stones across the valley at Dovedale (15 minutes’ drive), or set out on the Tissington Trail, which heads out of Ashbourne to wend its way along 13 miles of abandoned railway line. Much excellent wandering can also be done in the grounds of the area’s smart stately homes. Chatsworth (40 minutes) is a fab place to fill a whole day out: as well as the art-filled house and gorgeous gardens, there’s also a farmyard, a kids’ trail and a huge playground area. The National Trust’s Sudbury Hall (15 minutes) and Kedleston Hall (20 minutes) are mighty fine options too. If you love a good scream as you plummet earthwards on a rollercoaster, a day out at Alton Towers (20 minutes) is a must on the schedule. For somewhat gentler family days out, try an animal encounter at Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes) or a steam-driven ride on the Churnet Valley Railway (20 minutes).
