General

  • Secluded site set on a working farm in the Aylesbury Vale
  • Five minutes' drive to Leighton Buzzard; next to Rushmere Country Park
  • A mile from the Grand Union Canal towpath and a waterside pub

Heron's Reach is a peaceful site set on the grounds of a Bedfordshire farm. The site's name is apt indeed, as all manner of wildlife can be spotted flying, scuttling and swooping its way around the main tree-lined field. This natural haven is also home to domesticated animals, including free-range hens and sheep.

The Aylesbury Vale is a hilly part of the world, but the only slope at Heron's Reach is gentle and flattens out towards the bottom. The main site area is lined by trees and is adjacent to Rushmere Country Park, a 400-acre forest with footpaths and cycle trails to explore.

It's a short walk up from the field to the handsome old farmhouse and its outbuildings. This is where useful facilities like parking, toilets and showers can be found.

Barbecues are allowed on site as long as they're raised off the grass. Charcoal and firelighters are available to purchase, so you won't have to make a dash to find the nearest forecourt or lug sacks of fuel around. In need of a supermarket? You'll be sorted if you make a stop-off in Leighton Buzzard (five minutes' drive).

Heron's Reach is a mile away from waterside walks along the Grand Union Canal and a popular towpath pub, where you can sip a cool drink and watch the narrowboats bobbing by. Another pub, this time with vistas over Aylesbury Vale, is an easy 20-minute walk away.

Lovely little cabin, tucked away from anyone else in the farm. Owners were lovely and friendly, shower was good and clean, and compost toilet was our own and close to cabin. Very snug with the wood stove and bed very comfy.

Rustic and Romantic is how I would describe the showman wagon accommodation. Everything has been well thought out to make your stay perfect. Included in the wagon is is cups, glasses, plates, bowls as well as kitchen utensils (including a corkscrew that came in useful), as well as use of a fridge/microwave, kettle, toaster in the nearby undercover facility.

The whole experience was amazing, the bed was so comfortable. The wood burner cast a lovely romantic glow over the whole wagon, as well as the solar lighting that kept going the whole night.

Shower and toilets is in a nearby wagon is clean.

The owner could not be anymore helpful.

Could not recommend this wagon any more, we both loved it and was perfect for a romantic weekend away.

From the manager...

Many thanks for the complimentary review! Glad you enjoyed your stay. Re: the tent positioning, the majority of our bookings for this year are for both tents so we took the decision to site them together. But thank you for the feedback - we will look at moving them further apart.

Rambles through Rushmere Country Park (five minutes' walk) will definitely be on the agenda, whether that entails taking the sculpture circuit and spotting wooden beasties, cycling on its well-maintained cross-country trails or watching over the kids at the play area.

Psssst, can you keep a secret? Also close by is Bletchley Park (15 minutes' drive), a former stately home that was commandeered by the army during the Second World War and turned into one of the world's top code-breaking hubs. The exhibits here explain all about the cipher that turned the tide of the conflict, but also give insight into the daily lives of the individual boffins who ran the show.

Other Milton Keynes-based adventures can be had at Daytona Outdoor Go-Karting (15 minutes) and Snozone (20 minutes). Out of town, animals like rhinos, tigers, elephants and bears can be surveyed from the comfort of your car at Woburn Safari Park (20 minutes), after which it's a toss-up between the top-rated Chafor Wine Estate (30 minutes) and the Silverstone Circuit (35 minutes).
