  • Secluded site set on a working farm in the Aylesbury Vale
  • Five minutes' drive to Leighton Buzzard; next to Rushmere Country Park
  • A mile from the Grand Union Canal towpath and a waterside pub
Heron's Reach is a peaceful site set on the grounds of a Bedfordshire farm. The site's name is apt indeed, as all manner of wildlife can be spotted flying, scuttling and swooping its way around the main tree-lined field. This natural haven is also home to domesticated animals, including free-range hens and sheep. The Aylesbury Vale is a hilly part of the world, but the only slope at Heron's Reach is gentle and flattens out towards the bottom. The main site area is lined by trees and is adjacent to Rushmere Country Park, a 400-acre forest with footpaths and cycle trails to explore. It's a short walk up from the field to the handsome old farmhouse and its outbuildings. This is where useful facilities like parking, toilets and showers can be found. Barbecues are allowed on site as long as they're raised off the grass. Charcoal and firelighters are available to purchase, so you won't have to make a dash to find the nearest forecourt or lug sacks of fuel around. In need of a supermarket? You'll be sorted if you make a stop-off in Leighton Buzzard (five minutes' drive). Heron's Reach is a mile away from waterside walks along the Grand Union Canal and a popular towpath pub, where you can sip a cool drink and watch the narrowboats bobbing by. Another pub, this time with vistas over Aylesbury Vale, is an easy 20-minute walk away.

Local attractions

Rambles through Rushmere Country Park (five minutes' walk) will definitely be on the agenda, whether that entails taking the sculpture circuit and spotting wooden beasties, cycling on its well-maintained cross-country trails or watching over the kids at the play area. Psssst, can you keep a secret? Also close by is Bletchley Park (15 minutes' drive), a former stately home that was commandeered by the army during the Second World War and turned into one of the world's top code-breaking hubs. The exhibits here explain all about the cipher that turned the tide of the conflict, but also give insight into the daily lives of the individual boffins who ran the show. Other Milton Keynes-based adventures can be had at Daytona Outdoor Go-Karting (15 minutes) and Snozone (20 minutes). Out of town, animals like rhinos, tigers, elephants and bears can be surveyed from the comfort of your car at Woburn Safari Park (20 minutes), after which it's a toss-up between the top-rated Chafor Wine Estate (30 minutes) and the Silverstone Circuit (35 minutes).
