  • Family-friendly campsite at a Biggesee beach in North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Five minutes’ drive to Atta Cave; 10 minutes to Attendorn
  • Sailing, paddleboarding and fishing on site, plus wellness centre
Surrounded by forested hills and lush meadows, EuroParcs Biggesee has a spectacular setting overlooking Biggesee reservoir in Ebbegebirge Nature Park. Guests keen to get out on the water or onto peaceful forest walks can do just that within five minutes’ stroll from this North Rhine-Westphalia campsite. Several miles' worth of hiking and biking trails follow the banks of the lake or disappear off into woodland – and of course, there’s plenty to do on the water too, from swimming off Waldenburger beach to fishing, dinghy sailing and paddleboarding round the wooded shoreline. And if you need a rest from all that outdoor activity, simply head for the wellness centre and put your feet up in the sauna. As well as lots of useful facilities like hot showers, baby-changing rooms and washing-up sinks in the pristine amenities block, there’s a daytime snack bar to keep hunger at bay. If you’re intent on going down the self-catering line, pick up fresh bread and groceries in the campsite shop, where bits and bobs like sun cream and swimwear are also sold. As there’s so much going on, ask the helpful team at reception if you’re unsure of what to do or where to go first; staff members there can also organise paddleboard hire and sailing lessons for you. Please note that this holiday park is currently still under development.

Local attractions

If you’re already had a dip in the fresh waters of Biggesee reservoir, it’s probably time to see it from another perspective. Try out the amazing lake views from the soaring Aussichtsplattform Biggeblick observation deck (15 minutes’ walk), or take a cruise on the MS Bigge from Sondern (15 minutes’ drive), taking in the impressive Sonderner Viaduct and the feat of engineering that is Attendorn Dam. If you fancy time-travelling back to the Middle Ages, take a trip to Attendorn (10 minutes) to explore its cobbled streets and medieval buildings, enjoy a beer in pavement cafés and take the kids to the Südsauerlandmuseum, with its eccentric displays of stuffed sabre-toothed tigers and Lego models. Drolshagen (25 minutes) is another pretty town, with lots of half-timbered chalet-style buildings and cute cafés in which to take a break. Should you hit a rainy day, head to Olpe (20 minutes) for a cinema and a waterpark with an indoor pool – or escape the weather by heading deep underground at Atta Cave (five minutes’ drive) to see its amazing limestone formations in one of Germany’s largest subterranean caverns.

Liked: Location, 2 minutes walk from the lake and facilities. The town of Attendorn is local and has many restaurants and shops. The van in the car park did good food and was very friendly

Disliked: Firstly we arrived to find the electric point 30 metres away from our pitch. Reception provided an old two pin cable that fitted neither our electrics nor the bollard. The girl in reception made it clear this wasn’t her problem… a trip to the garden centre in Attendorn provided adapters but was 40 euros down before I’d even pitched!

The site is very run down and unloved. The washrooms by reception are good but the other one is falling apart. We saw lots of mice running around the reception/ washroom complex. All of the children’s facilities seemed closed or abandoned.

On Friday night a number of groups arrived who played loud music into the small hours.

Liked: Clean facilities, warm showers and good location.

Disliked: The site was under heavy renovation, which was not made clear at the time of booking. The pictures advertising the site were vastly inaccurate. The accessible areas of the site are run down and unkempt. Our pitch was muddy, stony and uneven. Our pitch was between two already established visiting families, and their pitches encroached into ours, meaning we had a reduced amount of space. To compound this, there were several groups of empty pitches which we could have been assigned. Contrary to claims in the advertisement, the entire site does not have views of the nearby lake.
