Bon voyage? You’ll surely have one while in Villatent at Ardèche Camping, a splash-worthy site south-eastern France site. This place is home to a set of swimming pools – one of which is covered and heated – so it’s a top spot for kid-friendly hols on the outskirts of Privas. There’s also a heated outdoor pool at this park – plus a paddling pool for les enfants – but places to submerge yourself in aren’t all it has going for it. A restaurant, snack bar and bar are at the entrance, so you can order sandwiches, pizzas and meals to eat in or swan off to your safari tent and cook in the well-equipped kitchenette. A supermarket and bakery are within 100 metres of the park’s entrance for stocking up on supplies and the centre of Privas is 15 minutes away on foot. Each tent fits up to five people and has a little outdoor space for the kids to play. Younger guests can also mess about down by the Ouvèze river right by the park, while families could head off on hiking, rafting, canoeing or mountain biking trips – ask at the site for details. Alternatively, have leisurely days around the Ardèche area, a place of handsome castles, eclectic markets, pretty waterfalls, vast vineyards and photogenic lavender fields.

Local attractions

Explores of the area around this smashing site should start in Privas (15 minutes’ walk). An old Huguenot town between the 16th and 17th centuries, it’s the capital of the Ardèche department. Chomp on the chestnuts grown locally while here – either puréed or sugary sweet – while admiring architecture such as the 15th-century Renaissance-style Diane de Poitiers Tower and the Louis XIII bridge. Slightly outside of town, mosey up to the Montoulon hill for views over the urban area and surrounding peaks (20 minutes’ walk) of the Ardèche Mountains Regional Nature Park (50 minutes’ drive) or head deep into this protected landscape for hikes around lakes and up old volcanoes. If you spend any time flicking through travel pics on Instagram, you might recognise the Pont-d'Arc (an hour), a natural limestone arch spanning a clear river. Head near here to explore the Ardèche Gorges and the Pont d’Arc Cavern, a manmade cave with replicas of prehistoric art, too.
