Laidback Landes vibes, a spacious waterpark and plenty of outdoor activities may make this Messanges park a mightily strong contender for your next South of France trip. This family-focused site has direct access to the gorgeous sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast and is surrounded by a sweet-smelling pine forest, making it a lovely backdrop for holidays by the beach. Scenery aside, there's also a bevy of top on-site attractions, including indoor and outdoor pools, three waterslides, a Turkish bath, tennis courts, a fitness suite, play areas and bike rental. Location-wise, the small town of Messanges (five minutes' drive) is just down the road, while the village of Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains' shops and bakeries are under half an hour away on foot. A tourist train also runs between the site and the village during the peak of the summer season. The well-presented accommodation at Lifestyle Holidays at Le Vieux Port is handily self-contained, with bright and spacious living quarters, well-equipped kitchens and an outdoor terrace all coming as standard. As a result, you can get involved in on-site life as much or as little as you like. The park's eye-catching entertainment schedule lays on a lot of different choices for guests, particularly in the high season when kids and teenagers have special events to get involved in and a bouncy castle to try out.

Liked: Park is excellent- absolutely fantastic for children. Best of beach and pool. Park was clean and well maintained. Beach was beautiful. Plenty of amenities on site (shop, restaurant). Lots of parks for the children to play.

Disliked: No oven in accommodation. Restaurant was on the expensive side. Didn't feel evening entertainment was catered for all visitors.

Take on the waves in style at Messanges Surf School (a few minutes' walk from site) or head to Soustons Plage (10 minutes' drive) and windsurf your way around a peaceful lake. Coolness aside, these energetic options open up a totally new way to see the local area – something also possible at Lac d'Hossegor (20 minutes), where kayak adventures in a gorgeous blue lagoon supply all of the scenery minus the risk of falling off your board… A little further down the coast, you could head to Basque Country cities like Bayonne (40 minutes) and Biarritz (an hour), full of traditional local architecture and smart sandy beaches. Stand-out Bayonne attractions include the town's botanical gardens, old city walls and a chocolate museum, while Biarritz's best landmarks – its aquarium, the Rocher de la Vierge rocks and a towering lighthouse – are nicely spread out along the coast. Inland, there's scope for restful strolls in Courant d'Huchet nature reserve (20 minutes), electric bike tours of Messanges with Trott'in Landes bike hire (five minutes), heritage hunting at Dax's military museum (40 minutes) or farm animal encounters at Camdelan - La Ferme Fantastique (45 minutes).
