  • A 50-acre eco retreat deep in Dyfi Forest
  • Combine hotel luxury with getting back to nature
  • Healing sessions, reiki and meditation all available
Secluded, spacious and deep in a forested valley: you might reckon this is Powys perfection... Eco Retreats Forest Retreat, near Machynlleth, is a Welsh eco site set up by its owners to combine hotel luxury with getting back to nature, so here you'll find a well-equipped and thoughtfully furnished space, in a valley setting deep in the Dyfi Forest and among the Welsh mountains (the site is so secluded and hidden that you won't get the exact location until after you've booked). Eco Retreats is four and a half miles from the road and several miles from the nearest houses, and has its accommodation set out on secluded plots spread around the site's 50 acres. There's no electricity or wifi, so turn the gadgets off and wander around the streams and woodland, blaze up a campfire and snuggle up under the stars: you might reckon that's pretty perfect too... And something else that's also pretty perfect? Healing sessions, reiki and meditation are available on site for an extra charge.

Local attractions

Like most of the rest of Wales, Powys has easy access to mountains, forests, the coast, fab fishing rivers and centuries' worth of Welsh heritage to investigate... Rock climbing, surfing and hiking are all available in the area; the closest beaches are Aberdyfi and Borth about five miles away and Bill Bryson fave Aberystwyth is under 10 miles. This is highly regarded mountain biking terrain too, with popular options including the three trails of Cadair Idris at the southern end of Snowdonia National Park and the several custom-designed tracks of the Coed y Brenin mountain bike centre. The Cli-machX Forestry Trail is near Eco Retreats in Dyfi Forest; it's one of the biggest forests in the UK so has miles of other trails throughout. Go to the Dyfi Osprey Project to see some of the better-known residents around the valley (Monty and co have featured on the BBC's Springwatch and Autumnwatch) and to the Ynys-hir RSPB reserve for more feathery sightings like red kites, pied flycatchers, lapwings and geese, alongside regular events for your little fledgelings. Also in the area, have a sublime subterranean time at King Arthur's Labyrinth, a centre at Machynlleth that also includes the Corris Craft Centre, Bards Quest and exploring the Corris slate mines. More modernly, try a day out at the Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth or at Machinations, based in Llanbrynmair.
