Quarry View Touring Park: All parked and ready to adventure

General

  • Peaceful touring park 10 minutes' walk from central Blaenau Ffestiniog
  • Portmeirion, Harlech Castle and Snowdon within a half-hour drive
  • A short walk from the heritage railway and ZipWorld adventure centre

To some it’s famed for its historic steam trains and slate caverns; to others it’s a buzzing hive of outdoorsy activities. But whatever brings you to Blaenau Ffestiniog, it's a good bet to bag a berth at Quarry View Touring Park.

This quiet touring park has been set up with life’s essentials in mind: a picnic area provides a place for open-air eats, and there’s a washing-up area, chemical disposal point and a waste area with recycling bins. Likewise, the shower blocks have been thoughtfully kitted out: benches and hooks save your clobber from damp patches and shaver points and a hairdryer will keep you looking dapper. And although there's no wifi on site, the presence of three mobile phone masts nearby means that most guests should be able to access 4G services.

Any amenities that aren’t on site are most likely available nearby: it takes 10 minutes or so to walk into town for shops, a cinema, pubs and takeaways or to board a train from the station (regular services run from here to Llandudno and Betws-y-Coed as well as the heritage line to Porthmadog). Also within walking distance are the adrenaline activities at Titan ZipWorld and Bounce Below, both set up in repurposed slate caverns.

Looking to explore further afield? An excellent idea – this nifty location is under half an hour’s drive from Portmeirion, Harlech Castle and Snowdonia National Park.

Friendly and welcoming on arrival - and some of the the nicest campsite showers that I’ve ever come across. Great location for a stopover when exploring southern Snowdonia. Just wish it was open all year round!

Although very small and tucked away in the village, the pitches were beautifully laid out, each space distinctly bordered from the next. As for the shower/toilets, although only a few, they were excellently equipped and are the cleanest we’ve experienced at a campsite.

The site is fun to find and access so you might miss the sign if its dark as its location is quite unusual set outside the village of Blaenau Ffestiniog surrounded by houses although you are not overlooked.

It is a small but quiet and immaculate site - best shower block and loos we have experienced with piped radio 2 and warmth! The showers were consistently hot and spotless (as was the site).

The pitches were level and really clearly marked with signs for your car / motorhome and awning - all laid to slate chippings. Perfect as it was wet so no soggy grass. Waste disposal facilities were easily accessible and again the area was really clean

Good location for exploring the area down to the coast and up into the mountains.

Thanks to John and Janet who were available at the end of the phone should you need anything. We had a great stay!

    Disliked:

Blaenau Ffestiniog was looking very tired and we couldn't find anywhere we could just go and sit in the pub for something to eat. The site had lots of leaflets with menu's for different places to eat but it could be a bit of a trek back late in the evening if walking.

Very modern and clean facilities. Small, family and dog friendly site which has beautiful surroundings. The owners are very friendly and helpful and will definitely be staying here again! Also it is walking distance to the town centre and also a short walk to zip world.

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike, but just to note that the turning/entry to the site is up a tight steep corner so can be a bit tricky but still manageable!

Local attractions

Even if you’re not much of a train buff, it’s worth taking a trip on the Ffestiniog Railway – the steam-powered services take in some of Snowdonia’s most spectacular scenery as they wend their way down to the coast at Porthmadog. If you’ve got an appetite for more, connect here for the Welsh Highland Railway all the way up to Caernarfon.

If you’d like to explore under your own steam, there are heaps of hikes in the surrounding Snowdonia National Park – Snowdon itself is just a few miles away, or you may prefer a quieter clamber up Crimpiau from Capel Curig or a circuit of Llyn Idwal from Ogwen Cottage for something a bit less leg-busting (both routes about half an hour's drive). The site is also a few minutes’ amble from the Antur Stiniog mountain bike trails, with an uplift service that’s been tipped as the country’s best.

Not enough adrenaline yet? The site is also a 10-minute stroll from Titan ZipWorld (to fly along two kilometres of zipline) and the underground adventure park in an old slate cavern at Bounce Below.

Calm that heart rate a little by heading coastwards for a trip to pretty Portmeirion or a wander around the castle and beach in Harlech – both are about half an hour away by car.

Must see

  • Portmeirion Gardens (14.1 kilometers)
  • Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) (14.8 kilometers)
  • Ffestiniog Railway (14.9 kilometers)

  • Ty^ Mawr Wybrnant (9.0 kilometers)
