  • Well-kept rural Denbighshire site raising money for charity
  • A 10-minute drive to the beaches of Rhyl and Prestatyn
  • Catering on site from Friday eve to Sunday morning
Want to book yourself a break and do some good for the world at the same time? What an excellent idea – and one that you can bring to reality when you stay at Pet Rescue Fundraising Camp Site, a five-acre site in the Denbighshire countryside just outside the village of Dyserth. Profits from stays go towards funding a pet rescue charity centre, so perhaps it’s no surprise that dogs are welcome to join you for a little holiday here. Doggy daycare is available for those who need it, and all dogs must be kept on a lead and supervised at all times (and you’ll need proof of up-to-date vaccinations for your pet to stay on site to ensure that all pets on site, including the site's rescue pets, stay protected from illness). This location makes a splendid spot for exploring north Wales – a cycle path runs past the entrance with a link to the North Wales Coastal Route, and there are plenty of walks around too. Rhyl and Prestatyn are both about 10 minutes’ drive away for beach times, and there are castles, gardens and all sorts of other things to fill days with. You’ll probably get a bit of a warm glow from knowing that you’re supporting a charitable cause by staying here – and that’s likely to grow even stronger when you see the facilities that have been provided. A washing-up area, toilets and showers are all included, and you can boost your break even further by hiring a firepit, grass heat shields (these are required for firepits or barbecues) or a windbreak. Logs can be purchased on site for the firepits. And that’s not all – there’s also a catering area that serves up cooked breakfasts, lunches, dinners and drinks (hot, cold and alcoholic) as well as running events like pizza nights and hotpot gatherings. The catering is open from Friday evening to Sunday morning breakfast.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked We booked quite last minute and were lucky enough to secure a pitch. We did expect to see animals but after reading the reviews we understood this was no longer the case and understood their reasons.
The play park in the centre of the pitches was perfect so we could sit and relax whilst watching the little one. The food hub was handy if it was the last night and had already packed up cooking equipment etc and it was very reasonably priced and the freshly cooked pizzas were lovely.

There was also a small bar for the adults.

The pitches were spready out nicely so it did not feel cramped and there were plenty of very nice hot showers, washing up stations and nice toilets.

Disliked We go to sleep quite early, 9ish and there was still a lot of noise with children playing and adults sat around their fires etc but again, we understand we go to sleep earlier than most!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Brilliant site with onsite food

Disliked Having to pay for rubbish

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Yes we totally agree and dislike having to pay £265+vat a week for it to be taken away, but that's life next year we will add it into our site fee's.
But we are really happy you will visit again and recommend the site to friends and family, so thank you and until next time Happy camping and safe travels

Primitive grass campsite

Liked All aspects of campsite very friendly staff and well run would recommend to friends and family.

Disliked Some of the pitches are a little rough and worn.

Children’s play area could do with an upgrade.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Sadly being an all grass site the pitch do show wear & tear, we have on some managed to put false grass to see if that helps, we hope to do more but the cost is difficult as we are here to raise funds for the Pet rescue. Totally agree the swings could do with an upgrade but this sadly is down to cost they may be removed after this season.
We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and your kind recommendations to family and friends. Until next time best wishes and happy camping & safe travels

Primitive grass campsite

Liked A lovely view and large campsite. The burger van was a bonus on Friday, good food. The fire pits are also good fun.

Disliked The toilets and showers for the price could have been nicer, they smelt really bad from the other side of the campsite. I have noticed the owner is very defensive on here and this is just a fact.
We also found that we have never been anywhere that charges to get rid of rubbish.
There is also a sewage site next door and it does smell (we walked past it).
It’s also not clear on the website that the hot tubs are a lot extra and also the food van is Friday-Sunday which was a shame. Also no shop on site so we personally wouldn’t be back however did enjoy our stay still.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Sorry you feel you don't wish to visit again or recommend our site, if I may answer you points in order.
Toilet on site 2 are for night time usage as it saves campers walking over to the flushing toilets on site 1 (only a few yards from your pitch) . There are showers on site 1 & 2 both sets are clean, free to use & were relined this season.
If you had read your information sheet you would have seen the need to pay for any rubbish to be removed as the skip cost over £265 per week asking £4 from a camper for 2 bags is not a lot, but we could add the cost in the camping fee's as most campsite do or would you prefer the charity we raise funds for to cover the cost?? at least we give you the options (look at the T&C on here it is not stated we will remove your rubbish/waste)
The water treatment works has cost millions of pounds is totally enclosed and no smell or the new build houses overlooking the site would not have sold (everyone go's to a toilet that waste go's to a treatment plant, plus the trees have now grown so visually it's hidden, the smell is produced by your subconscious suggestion.
The Pitchup has not got the listing for the hot tubs so the cost of heating over a thousand litres of water + the water meter cost is immaterial to your booking.
The food van is as stated open at weekends & Bank holidays. The shop for anything you've forgotten is incorporated within the food van and you only need to ask for anything needed as the staff have access, but with a shop within 1 mile it's normally not an issue unless campers never leave the site, & we shop for them. We charged your phones daily at no charge, and if I am defensive so would you be, as a group of 3 young ladies very well behaved, and very pleasant had made the comments you have plus the farmers are spraying field all around the campsite and the country the small is your food being produced for the shops and in turn for the treatment works. I hope this information helps answer some of your points, I do thank you for giving me the opportunity to answer without bias. Best wishes to you all and with your futures adventures through life.

Local attractions

Time to hit the coast? Take your bucket and spade to the sandy beaches of Rhyl or Prestatyn (both 10 minutes’ drive), get over to Llandudno (half an hour) to walk on the pier and ride the Great Orme tramway, or continue to Conwy (half an hour) to explore the castle. For rural walks you can stay local for the 15-minute stroll to Dyserth Falls, climb the peaks of the neighbouring Clwydian Range or dip your toes into Snowdonia National Park (40 minutes’ drive). The pretty pathways of Bodnant Garden (half an hour) are well worth a wander too. This being Wales, you’re never far from a castle – the turrets of Rhuddlan Castle (five minutes) are the closest, but TV fans may like to drop in at Gwrych Castle (15 minutes) to see where I’m A Celeb was staged.
