Powered grass campsite

Liked This site was wonderful, dare we say possibly the best we have stayed at yet! The staff are very lovely, attentive and observant, ensuring you have everything you need for an enjoyable, comfortable and easy stay. We felt very safe as 2 female campers that were staying a long way from home. The facilities were spotless. The showers were hot and decent sized cubicles. The toilets were always clean and tidy no matter the time of day. The pot wash area was like none I’ve ever seen before, with plenty of sinks, lots of space, a bowl for your pots and a drying rack. There is also a dishwasher in there, though we didn’t use it. There are drying facilities for your clothes also which was a nice bonus but we did not use these either. They are big on recycling and offer a clean and tidy space for you to do this. The pitches were decent sizes for both grass and non-grass pitches. It was quiet with lovely scenery. Plenty of places around the site to deposit dog waste. They hand you a small map on day of arrival with a walking route into the Hay-on-Wye town and while not completely safe (with having stiles, crossing a race course, and walking along a country road with no paths), it seems to be the safest/best route if walking. This is not a negative on the campsite, as it is not their fault, it is simply an FYI. The couple managing the site were lovely. WiFi was very good, quick and efficient. Site was very ell-lit on a night but not so much so that it came into our tent or kept us awake. Blocks for disposable BBQs at hand for if needed. Chemically waste disposal VERY clean! Pretty, scenic routes and straight-forward drives to other areas of Wales form here, too. We drove and hour and a half from the site to Barry Island and back and found it easily accessible. Found the site to be in a decent location for this. Very happy with our stay and would stay here again.

Local attractions

Spreading along the banks of the River Wye, The Weir Garden (half an hour’s drive) has shaded waterside paths dotted with benches for picnics. Birdlife abounds here – from finches to mallards and woodpeckers – and if you’re lucky you might spot an otter, too. There’s also a walled garden and a glasshouse. The 13th-century cathedral in Hereford (40 minutes) holds the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world drawn on a calf’s skin and adorned with real and mythical beasts, plus dog-headed men and one-legged people. After getting to know these unusual characters, visit the Museum of Cider, with its huge presses, and stock up on this locally made drink. To learn a thing or two about Wales’s mining history, head to the Big Pit National Coal Museum (50 minutes), which occupies a former coal mine. Don a hard hat and join the underground tour, which takes in both the coal faces and the engine houses.
