  • Family-friendly site on the banks of the Banwy river in Mid Wales
  • A five-minute drive to a steam railway; 10 minutes to Welshpool
  • River fishing permitted; play area on site; 500 metres from a pub
Whether you're planning days of outdoor pursuits or scenic steam railway rides, your holiday in Mid Wales should be off to a flying start at Henllan Caravan Park… This family-friendly site first opened in the 1960s, and it has grown into a very gorgeous spot to set down on the banks of the Banwy river, with fishing available in the river and a play area set up for those guests who have brought the whole family along. Another highlight is that there's a pub just 500 metres from the pitching field; call in to see what food and entertainment they have planned (it varies throughout the season). There’s a golf course 10 minutes’ drive away for any keen golfers and the surrounding Powys landscape has many opportunities for things like mountain biking, swimming, climbing and hiking for all the adventurous types. Shops and that sort of thing can be tracked down in Welshpool, 10 minutes’ drive away. This historic town has some gorgeous Georgian buildings and the Montgomery Canal for a peaceful stroll or you could look in on the National Trust’s Powis Castle and Garden (20 minutes) while you’re around there. For more nostalgic activities, the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway is five minutes’ drive from the site. Back at your riverside site, there’s a shower block ready for you to freshen up. The pitches themselves are all well-maintained and flat with great views, so your stay should be both comfortable and scenic. Please note that the facilities block is approximately 300 yards from the main pitching area.

What customers say

This well-maintained, clean, and peaceful campsite has a beautiful riverside location and friendly, helpful staff. Reviewers praised the flat sites, spacious feel, and secure dog area. While the on-site pub and playground were popular, the distance to and limited number of washrooms were frequently noted as drawbacks, especially for families.

Liked Welcoming relaxed site lovely setting. Facilities were clean, hot electric shower. Need a torch at night

Disliked It wasn’t an issue on my visit the site was quiet but there is only one ladies shower which could be problematic at busy times.

Liked Beautiful location, such a pretty place with river running next to site and walks next to river. Birds and wildlife all around you. The river goes down to a beach effect with no bank, great for paddling in and playing in for kids. Site managers very helpful and chatty.
Perfect if you have a caravan or motor home with own facilities.
The well stocked small shed was very well stocked and kept everything you needed.

Disliked However
We have a microcamper and a large driveaway awning which has a toilet space. If I was camping in a tent the story would be very different. To reach toilet and shower block, plus washing up area and washing machine etc is for me a 5 minute walk. We visited at a quiet time but had we gone when the field was busy with tents there were nowhere enough facilities. Only 1 shower and 2 toilets and 1 sink. Facilities were clean but lacked essentials like a wooden shower board to step on. Floor tiled so slippery and no squeegy to dry floor. We visited at one time and floor was covered in wet grass and nowhere to try and mop it away so had to step on it in barefeet before using using shower. No hairdryer. They really need to build a shower and toilet block at camping and electric hook up field so you don't have to walk through the static caravan park to reach the current one. If this was done it would be a perfect site.

Liked Great welcome and spacious grass pitch.

Disliked Originally booked a hard standing, but changed to grass as the hard sranding were situated across from a row of bins and felt like a car park. Toilet facilities poor and 5 min walk from touring pitches.

Liked Simple site with nice open field. Clean tidy and pitches were spaced. Nice little store for essentials and a helpful warden

Disliked Shower and toilets are a long way from main field. Not alot in terms of walks other than a 3km loop on small roads

Liked I thought this place was a little gem!! We camped on the electric grass pitch. The park managers Andy, Jo and their son were so welcoming. Always about tending to guests, dropping off essentials and generally just making sure everyone is happy. Real family run vibe to the park which I personally like. Toilets are a bit of a walk from the camping pitch but they are in the process of getting one built closer. The stream running through is a nice touch. Other guests on the pitches were really respectful and kept it quiet late on. Our kids loved the park, it's tidy, safe and well kept. Brilliant place to turn your work phone off and reset for a few days with the family. We ended up staying an extra night! Fantastic value for money.

Local attractions

With Eryri/Snowdonia National Park to the west and the Shropshire Hills National Landscape to the south-east, there’s a lot of hiking accessible from this site. You could set your compass towards Lake Vyrnwy (35 minutes' drive), just outside of Snowdonia, for a day of lakeside walks, watersports and cycling followed by a cream tea – or perhaps head up towards Pistyll Rhaeadr (45 minutes) for a four-mile hike with a reward in the form of a spectacular waterfall. Add some historical elements to your holiday in the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. The Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle (35 minutes) still stands from the Bronze Age and the moorlands of the surrounding Stapeley Hill make for another splendid walk. Then there are the Stiperstones (45 minutes), a cool ridge that's made up of rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old – another place for a good long wander. When you’re ready to muck into the rural way of life, head to Park Hall The Countryside Experience (40 minutes), a farm with play areas that has opened its doors for families to get involved in animal activities like meeting the alpacas or watching the pig racing.
