  • Family-friendly park with spectacular Solway Firth views
  • Kids' and teens' clubs, soft play, amusements and outdoor playgrounds
  • Showbar, bar-restaurant, takeaway and 25-metre indoor pool with flume
Northerners, fear not: southern-ness is not a prerequisite to enjoyment of a stay at Southerness Holiday Park at the foot of the Galloway Hills; the superb sea views and great facilities on site should please all comers. The pitches at this family-friendly park look out over the windswept beauty of the Solway Firth towards the English Lake District; and the surrounding countryside is teeming with wildlife, from the tiny creatures that inhabit the rockpools on the neighbouring beach to the great stags stalking the Galloway Forest Park further inland. Amphibian admirers will be interested to know too that the site is next door to Scotland’s largest breeding colony of Natterjack toads… When it comes to your own wee beasties, Southerness serves up a generous dollop of fun for kids too: buzzing clubs catering for the very small to hulking teens; an indoor pool, a flume, fountains and toddler pool (and a Jacuzzi for the grownups); a soft play area; crazy golf; amusements; outdoor playgrounds – plus of course the lively schedule of evening entertainment for the whole family in the Sunset Showbar. There’s a good choice of menu options in the bar-restaurant, as well as fresh Costa coffee; or you can opt for a takeaway if you just want to chill out in your own space and admire the views. There’s free wifi in designated areas of the site.

What customers say

This large, tidy campsite boasts friendly staff and a lovely seaside setting. Pitches are roomy, and the washrooms/showers are often lauded for being spotless. The pool and entertainment are big hits with families. Some found it bustling with noise and pricey on-site food/drinks. A few noted older facilities in spots.

Liked The weather! Toilet n shower ok.

Disliked Having to be off site by 10am That gives the site 4 hours of empty space. Campervan pitches don’t need cleaned. We won’t return because of this. It’s usually 12.
WiFi - non existent and apparently needs paid for but still not guaranteed.

Liked Good welcome, plenty of friendly staff around to support. Even got a gentleman near the pitch area to welcome people and point out the amenities. Easy access to all the facilities, and the entertainment for the young ones is very good!

Disliked Everything is double or triple the price! I get that it needs to be a bit more expensive, but not at this level nowadays. Especially if you need to travel 12 miles to the nearest town. Check-out for your own tents and caravans should be after 10 am even check-in is only allowed at 2 pm, understandable if you need to clean anything but it's not the case. It's like a wake-up call and a rush for everyone to be on time... not what we wanted before going home.

Liked We enjoyed the location, the site was clean and tidy, the staff friendly. The touring warden, Russell, did an amazing job on the touring field, assisting when arriving on site, directing us to our pitch, keeping the toilets very clean (even dealing with vomit and faeces left by other guests) He even came and assisted us whilst we tried to put up our awning in very strong winds. He's an asset to your site.

Disliked No real dislikes, the weather could have been better, nothing anyone can do about that.

Liked Large and level hardstanding pitch. Hot showers and a warm toilet block.

Disliked Water only dribbled out of tap so it took a long time (over an hour) to half fill our 50 ltr motorhome water tank. The site had only just opened for the season two days before our arrival, so perhaps this will improve as time goes on. Toilets not the cleanest.

From the manager: Hi there,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review following your stay. We’re really pleased to hear you were happy with your large, level hardstanding pitch and that you enjoyed the hot showers and warm toilet facilities.

We’re sorry to hear about the issues you experienced with the water pressure when filling your motorhome tank, as well as your concerns regarding the cleanliness of the toilets. As you mentioned your stay was at the very start of the season, we appreciate your understanding, but we do recognise this is still not the standard we aim to provide. Your comments have been shared with the team to review and address.

Thank you again for your feedback—we hope to welcome you back again in the future for a more seamless experience. ^EC

Local attractions

Assuming the weather is kind, the area surrounding Southerness Holiday Park is tiptop for anyone looking for an active holiday; do your own thing or shake off the cobwebs and try something new at one of the excellent activity centres in the Dumfries and Galloway region. Golfers are in for a particular treat, given the enormous choice of excellent courses nearby (the closest championship course is on the doorstep, in Southerness). If you fancy getting out and about, there’s a plethora of attractions to choose from: tickle your taste buds with a trip to the Cocoa Bean Factory or nearby ice cream factory; rattle around on the barrel train at Mabie Farm Park, a great value attraction packed with activities to keep the kids entranced all day; ramble around the romantic ruins of Sweetheart Abbey; clamber around a couple of castles, or visit the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries. Or you could head to one of Dumfries and Galloway’s 'themed' towns: Wigtown for bookish types, Castle Douglas for foodies, or the artists’ town of Kirkcudbright.
