  • Small, peaceful south Somerset five minutes' drive from Wedmore
  • Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge and Wells Cathedral within 20 mins' drive
  • One-acre camping field in a secluded orchard; dogs welcome on site
Peace and pretty views come as standard at Orchard View – this small-scale site in the south Somerset countryside has been set up in a secluded apple orchard with a backdrop of the Mendip Hills National Landscape. There’s plenty of space to pitch up comfortably here, with an acre of land set aside for the campsite and guest numbers kept on the low side. The village of Wedmore is about five minutes’ drive away for shops, pubs, restaurants and other handy amenities. This is a super spot for those aiming to get out for walks or bike rides – there are footpaths and bridleways all around, taking you through the woods and foothills that run down to the Somerset Levels. Cheddar Gorge is about 20 minutes away by car if you want to take a hike between the craggy cliffs over there for a change of scenery. Various essential amenities are back on site for guests – including a toilet and sink, showers, a chemical waste disposal point and water/waste water facilities. Dogs are welcome to join you at this site, which is well geared up for travelling pets. If you like to finish up your camping days by building a blaze of some sort, you’ll be in good company here – open fires and barbecues are welcome in the designated areas, and logs, charcoal and firelighters are all available to buy on site.

What customers say

This small campground gets high marks for friendly owners, cleanliness, and a peaceful vibe. Campers rave about spacious sites and beautiful rural views. Washrooms are clean and well-kept, with a handy communal fridge/freezer. Great spot for exploring local sights. A few noted minor hot water issues for dishwashing and occasional noise, but management's on top of things for a quiet stay.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very friendly owners, clean toilets and showers, useful to have a communal fridge and freezer. Spacious pitch, lovely countryside location.

Disliked First time camping, wasn’t prepared for the thistles in the grass, but to be fair we were offered a smaller pitch on the cut grass, but decided we preferred a bigger space.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Campsite was quiet for most of the week, everyone settled down around 10 which allowed the kids to sleep. Marie & co were very friendly & supportive - especially when we left our tent pegs in London! Horses were well cared for & our little girl Loved being able to say hi to them every morning. Facilities were always clean, site was regularly checked & toilet roll stocked up etc. showers & toilets were decent & made the week comfortable. If there were any issues we knew we’d get support from Marie straight away - a very lovely hostess!

Disliked Nothing to put here. Well absolutely stay again & highly recommend the site to friends and family!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Showers and toilets were clean, with hooks and shelving.

Disliked We were confused upon arrival to the site as it didn't look much like the photos when booking – it wasn't what we expected. It was cramped and the camping field was in actuality very small, much smaller than the photos suggest. No clear markings to demarcate pitches.
It seems there are electric hook up pitches, but they are never available for booking as they appear to be occupied by long term caravans/motorhomes, which changes the atmosphere of the site.
Wouldn't recommend especially to families – there was loud music with swear words playing till the evening, and thumping music elsewhere in the site playing past 10:30pm/11pm. In fact we saw 2 families arrive at the site & try to pitch up before leaving and not return.

From the manager: Hi I am so sorry you feel this way I normally greet every person that arrives on site but I have had a family issue this weekend and have kind of neglect my campers I do apologise. I wish you would of brought any complaints to my attention about music and swearing as I can’t deal with if I don’t no about them and would not of tolerated this on site. I don’t have any permanent people on site but I do have a couple of caravans that are mine that I rent out to holiday makers. I very rarely get bad reviews they are normally all positive feed back and we pride our selfs on a friendly peaceful stay. I’m sorry this wasn’t the case on your stay. I hope in the future you will give us another try and your experience will be better. Sorry again Marie

Local attractions

If the sight of all those apples has put you in the mood for a few sips of cider, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s only a half-hour walk to Lands End Farm, where Roger sells flagons of his award-winning cider alongside local cheeses and other bits and pieces for your picnic. For a different tipple, head to Fenny Castle Vineyard (10 minutes’ drive) for a tour and a browse of the shop. The natural landscapes around here are equally enticing, whether you stay above ground for hikes around Cheddar Gorge and Ebbor Gorge National Nature Reserve (both 20 minutes) or delve underground to explore Wookey Hole caves (15 minutes). Elsewhere nearby you might like to take a stroll around the cathedral city of Wells (20 minutes), hit the beach in Burnham-on-Sea (25 minutes) or take a trip to Glastonbury (25 minutes) for the abbey, indie shops and a walk up Glastonbury Tor.
