General

  • Family-friendly site with a relaxed atmosphere on 100 acres of land
  • In the Mendip Hills, a five-minute bike ride from Thatchers Cider farm
  • Firepits and campfires encouraged; café-bar and outdoor activities

Fancy having the freedom to explore ancient woodland by day and settle in next to an open fire by night (but with the added bonus of hot showers and flushing loos)? Make Basecamp at Mendip Activity Centre your next spot for a getaway and all of the above shall be at your fingertips.

This hidden park with an off-grid feel is a top choice for folk who like to keep moving: it’s got an outdoor activity centre a five-minute walk away with rock climbing, caving, skiing, tobogganing, frisbee golf, abseiling, archery, rifle shooting, bushcraft, mountain biking and axe throwing on offer (for an extra fee).

All this plus 100 acres of land on site means outdoor playtimes, family ball games or just spreading out with a book on the grass are possible, plus a leisure centre with a gym and indoor pool is under five minutes’ drive if indoor activities are preferable.

Back at the park, food and drinks are on hand at the pop-up tavern, which serves up local ciders and ales along with pizzas, loaded fries and jacket potatoes every evening (it's also the place for hot drinks and a full English brekkie on a Sunday morning). A 24-hour garage and well-stocked shop are 10 minutes away by car for those who need to sort snacks and self-catering food.

A quick heads up if you’re planning on staying at the site: your tent or campervan needs to be under 2.7 metres high and no caravans or motorhomes are permitted because of access restrictions.

£16 per night, no EHU. It’s a pitch where you like site, in a series of fairly flat fields, on top of a hill. They ask for 3m between units.

Showers are brand new, clean and hot. Push button operation but with no temp control so might be too hot for some.

Toilets are new and clean. Remember to take your own loo roll though as they are not providing due to Covid.

There’s an outdoor covered pot wash, water points, a chest freezer that can used by campers and a usb charging point.

On the site, there is also a small shop with essentials, a pop up tavern selling some hot food, breakfasts and beer! The pub was well run and quiet for a Friday night, the food was basic but tasty.

    Disliked:

The hand wash areas at the toilet block have cold water only and no drying facilities, so take a small hand towel or prepare to shake your hands dry.

A mixed group of 2 families decided to use the hedgerow/longer grass behind their tent as a potty disposal place with no regard for who might be pitched there next 🤢

Given current Covid restrictions, there were a number of very large groups meeting up on site, all well in excess of the latest rule of 6. This might not be an issue for some but for me, it felt unsafe.

We had a great time at Mendip Basecamp. The facilities were absolutely spotless, the shower had consistently hot water (which was lovely after a day of acitivites). The staff were really friendly. We did the archery, axe throwing and rock climbing and the instructors were really helpful. The price is great for what you get in return. Also some amazing places to visit only a short drive away. Highly recommend!

    Disliked:

We would say the only downside was that despite the field being so large and empty, we had people turn up the next day and set up their camp right next to us, we couldnt even park our car, even though there was plenty of space elsewhere, not necessarily Mendips fault but was a bit annoying. Perhaps suggest some guidance from the staff at those times.

although busy there is plenty of room to spread out and find a quiet spot, in fact we were surprised how quiet it was as people seemed to adhere to quiet time after 10pm. We also loved the fact you could have a fire pit,we brought our own but they were dotted about made from old washing machine drums. There is a pleasant walk from the campsite through the woods,

Check out the rest of the Mendips too, perhaps while meandering across Cheddar Gorge (15 minutes), Burrington Combe (10 minutes), or the lakes of Blagdon and Chew Valley (20 minutes).

Outside of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, wander Weston-super-Mare’s seafront and pier while sampling fish ‘n’ chips (20 minutes) and give Bristol a little attention, particularly the city’s historic harbour, suspension bridge and the Cabot Circus mall (half an hour).
