  • Wild camping with Glastonbury Tor views in Somerset’s Mendip Hills
  • A 10-minute drive to Wells, and 20 minutes from Glastonbury
  • Wildlife and walks on site; pub a five-minute stroll away
With a spectacular south-facing position on the edge of the Mendip Hills in Somerset, Croscombe Camping overlooks open countryside and the pretty little village of Croscombe – and you can even glimpse Glastonbury Tor in the distance. This is relaxed and definitely wild camping, so simply turn up and pitch your tent wherever you like in the field. There’s masses of room for couples, families and their dogs (on a lead please), and while campfires and barbecues are allowed, please raise them off the ground to protect the grass. Simple facilities include hot showers and flushable loos. As long as it’s dry you can park next to your tent, and if not, there’s a car park on site. There are no bins though, so please take your rubbish home to recycle. You can get on to country walks right from the campsite, where you might get to see foxes, badgers, deer and rabbits, or bring your bikes and enjoy a cycle ride around quiet country lanes. It’s only a five-minute walk to the nearest pub, The George, which serves Somerset scrumpy cider along with excellent pub food, takeaways and pizza on Saturdays.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The view was stunning, toilets and showers were cleaned daily. The 3 toilets always had soap and toilet roll and were fully functional rather than compost toilets which we had used before (and hated!) water pressure and heat in the 3 showers was great- downside was they smelled a bit because the water is sat underneath. There were cute fairy lights on the barns which also had some sofas to relax on, you can pitch anywhere you like and there are sinks to wash up in. The owner was super friendly. You can park right next to your tent too which made setting up and packing away a lot easier.

Disliked The only things we didn’t like was that there were no bins on site for rubbish or recycling (we did know this as made clear when booking though) and there is no hot water in the toilets or at the washing up sinks.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Very large field so plenty of space. At the top of a very steep, narrow lane so drive and walk carefully. Fantastic views. Nice, clean toilets and hot showers (turn the red lever!). 10min drive to Wells. 30min to Bath Park & Ride (free!). Bring a torch and a power block to keep the phone charged. Great site. Would definitely recommend.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Chilled, relaxed site with loads of space (not at all busy during the week in the summer holidays). Loved the location with incredible view. Felt very rural but well located for local sites and lovely pub. For a basic site, the toilet and shower facilities were excellent and the barn would have been great in rainy weather. Owners very friendly and helpful.

Disliked Nothing but just to note that the field is quite slopey so if it were busier, it might be a struggle to find a flattish pitch. It didn't bother us but the washing up area only has cold water. And the shower temperature was very tricky to control until we were given instructions (and then it was fine!).

Local attractions

Catch the Somerset history vibe with visits to the flamboyant, Gothic-era Wells Cathedral (10 minutes’ drive), and check out the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens too. Glastonbury (20 minutes) has an atmospheric abbey of its own, and loads of quirky little shops selling joss sticks and silver jewellery, while the darker side of local life is revealed on ghostly guided walks of Shepton Mallet Prison (10 minutes). Want to breathe in more of that fresh Somerset air? Scramble up to the top of Glastonbury Tor (20 minutes) for far-reaching views of the Somerset Levels (30 minutes), where you can spot wading birds on walks and cycles through sleepy villages. For more hardcore exercise, take a climbing course on the limestone cliffs of Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes). Animatronic dinosaurs, cave tours and mini golf may well keep kids entertained for much of the day at Wookey Hole Caves (15 minutes), or you can clamber aboard a steam train on the East Somerset Railway (15 minutes) to chug through the countryside. And if you’re holidaying with teens, pray they don’t know about Clarks Village (25 minutes), or they’ll be busy spending your retirement fund in the cut-price designer outlet stores.
